Raymond Woods Obituary

Raymond Charles Woods

May 9, 1950 - May 23, 2024

Fort Worth, Texas - Raymond Charles Woods, born May 9, 1950, in Oklahoma City, OK, journeyed from this world quickly and peacefully on May 23, 2024.

Visitation: 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at Greenwood Funeral Home in Memorial Suite B; 3344 White Settlement Rd., Fort Worth, Texas 76107. Graveside Service: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2024 at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Ray graduated from Richardson High School in Richardson, TX in 1967, and entered the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman stationed in Yokosuka, Japan and worked in the main Naval Hospital in orthopedics during the Vietnam War. After discharge, he became a paramedic working the ambulance in Denton, Texas. He started his own non-emergency ambulance service, MedTran, while also moon lighting at the county hospital in Denton. There he met his wife-to-be, Nancy, who was a fresh RN working asa charge nurse in ICU in 1976. Life took them to Ft. Worth where he went back to school and obtained his English and Physical Education degree. He taught Honors English and Greek Mythology at Nolan Catholic High School and coached the golf team, winning 2 consecutive State Championships. Those banners still hang in the gym. He then transferred to St. Andrews Catholic School as the boy's athletic director. After many years he shifted careers and started work at Lowes but continued his passion for teaching. He taught English composition and writing as an adjunct professor at Tarrant County College. He retired in 2017.

Ray's greatest joys were his daughter, Amy; sons, Thomas and Stefan; and family. He played golf almost every day and played 18 holes the day before his passing. He marshalled at the golf course on the weekend. He was always good for a bad joke, a good laugh, telling really long drawn-out stories with friends and family. He loved jigsaw puzzles and always had one in progress. He was the author of 6 books, 2 short stories, 1 children's book and a complete work book for high school students to assist in composition and writing.

He was known for his golden heart, loud voice, awful hearing, and love of animals. His love for his children and grandchildren is legendary and he will be missed for all this and much more.

Goodbye my love, until we meet again.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Sr. and Madge Woods.

He is survived by wife of 44 years, Nancy Roberts Woods of Ft. Worth, TX; daughter, Amy Crowell and her husband, Scott of Dallas, TX; son, Thomas Woods and wife, Cherise Johnson of Colleyville, TX; son, Stefan Woods and wife, Denise of Carrollton, TX; sister, Donna Lyn Woods of Avinger, TX; sister, Marianne Wiley and husband, Michael of Austin, TX; brother, Donald Jr. of Colorado; sister-in-law, Linda Roberts of Ft. Worth, TX; cousins, Vicky and Peter Becker of Springfield, VA. Uncle Ray -
I am sure going to miss your humor and those bright blue eyes. You really touched my heart with your kindness towards everyone and especially that kitty that you and I were the only fans of. Ha! Thank you for loving my Aunt, she's an Angel on earth. We sure are going to miss you and I promise to finally take the time to finish reading all of your books so that I can feel a little closer to you. You are going to have some good company with you in Heaven... Know that the full life and memories you have left behind are cherished. Wishing you all the Hole in One's at Heavens Golf Course.
Love you Uncle

Ray will be dearly missed. I had the pleasure of playing a few rounds of golf with him when I lived in Fort Worth. He was such a great guy. It was an honor knowing him. My condolences to his family.

I still remember Ray bringing a student's composition to me so I could call her into my office and compliment her on her work. That gesture far outweighed when I had to be a disciplinarian. It obviously was a highlight for me. He was such a caring, dedicated teacher.

Ray was a wonderful teacher at Kennedale JHS when I was principal. He truly cared for his students. God rest his precious soul.
