Marie Hansen Lewis, beloved mother, stepmother, grandmother, civil servant, Spanish and History teacher, passed away from complications after a stroke at Tuscany Hospice, in Conroe, Texas. She was 84.
Marie was born on November 7, 1939, in Mission, Texas, and was the oldest child of Herbert W. Hansen and Mildred L. Aitchison Hanson. She was the wife of Arnold D. Lewis from June 5, 1962, until his death in 2005. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, and her step-daughter, Laura Carolyn Lewis Gill. She is survived by her stepson, Charles E. Lewis; her daughter, Sarah M. Lewis; her son, Walden H. "Hank" Lewis; and his wife/her daughter-in-law, Julie Z. Lewis; brother, Edward Hansen; her grandchildren, Helena A. Lewis and Jason H. Lewis; and additional family, William D. "Bill" Fong; his wife, Jing Z. Fong; "bonus" grandchildren, Tre Fong, Koa Fong, Kiana Fong, Kaia Fong, Ann Gill Williams, Edward Gill, and Paul Gill. Marie lived in Baton Rouge, La., for 20 years before moving to Conroe, Texas, where she lived for 31 years, until her death.
Marie graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Texas, in the late 1950s, and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in History and Library Science from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. She earned a Master's Degree in Library Science from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La.
Marie worked as a civil servant for the Louisiana Department of Public Safety for 20 years prior to earning a teaching certificate in Texas, where she worked teaching Spanish and History for the following school districts over the course of an additional 20 years: Conroe I.S.D., Willis I.S.D., Klein I.S.D., and Cold Spring I.S.D., from which she retired from over a decade ago.
Marie had been an active Member of The Seeker's Sunday School class at First United Methodist Church, Conroe, prior to its leaving the denomination. Marie was an active member of The Woodlands Writing Guild, having poetry and stories published in some of their anthologies. Marie was a lifelong learner, having invested a lot of time during her retirement researching different periods of World History. She was a doting grandmother, who helped with the early education of her grandchildren, and continued to help cultivate their love of learning as they grew into young adults attending universities. She enjoyed classical music, Science Fiction, and Mysteries, Chinese food, gardening, and observing the many cats, squirrels, and other animals that passed through her yard.
Funeral Services will be Friday, July 5, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., at Cashner Funeral home, 801 Teas Rd., Conroe, Texas, 77303. Visitation will begin one hour prior. Following the service, Interment will take place at Garden Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, we are requesting donations be made to a Memorial Scholarship Fund in her name being established at Lone Star College-University Park, in Houston, Texas. The fund will help support students who are majoring in History, which was Marie's great passion and area of expertise. Please contact her son, Hank Lewis, for details.
