Lynn Jay Besser passed away due to complications of a sudden illness on October 23, 2021, treasured by all who were lucky enough to know her.
Born in Chicago to a loving mother, Myrtle (Tanenbaum) Besser and a devoted father, Jack M. Besser, the family moved to Glencoe, IL in the late 1950's as her dad's business was successfully expanding. Lynn graduated New Trier H.S. in 1960 and attended Mather College at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, receiving her Sociology BA in 1964. After achieving her MSW at UC Berkeley in 1967, Lynn became a LCSW in 1970.
Preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Mark Turek, she is survived by younger siblings, Donna Turek and Clifford Besser, as well as her cousin, Stephen Glick, who grew up in the Besser household and considered Lynn as his surrogate big sister. She was a beloved aunt to her nieces, Olivia (Turek) Bakunas, Jacqueline Turek, Lucy (Turek) Damato and nephews, Nathan, Hank and Eli Besser; and a great aunt to their extended families. Lynn carried a deep and lasting fondness for cousins, Kara (Glick) Chesser, Les Bender, Elaine (Bender) Seidman and their extended families as well. We would be remiss, and Lynn would not forgive us, if we failed to mention her beloved Belgian Malinois four-legged companion, Nell, who has been adopted by personal trainer and friend, Carlos Aguirre.
Lynn was certainly active in philanthropy. Her philanthropic passions and commitment to all things in need (human beings, our planet, birds and beasts) truly defined the core and soul of her adult life. Blessed with financial resources, Lynn chose to share that blessing to help and care for those less fortunate. Let the memory of Lynn's passion to help others stand as a shining example for us all to follow.
Lynn was more spiritual than religious by nature, yet she did not forget to honor her Jewish heritage and roots. Throughout her life there was a merciful goodness within Lynn that touched the lives of countless family, friends and companions. By adding Lynn into our lives she brought humor, a sharp intellect, kindness, compassion and a shining light into our hearts and homes. It would be a gross understatement to simply say she will be missed. May the gentle beacon of her memory guide us all toward seeking and believing in the basic goodness of each other and the world around us.
A funeral service will be held Friday, October 29, 11:00 AM, with a catered reception to follow at Weinstein & Piser Funeral Home, 111 Skokie Blvd, Wilmette. Interment will be private. Due to the current guidelines, masks are required indoors for all those attending. Info: 847-256-5700.
