There can be undeniable truth in When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. February 1986, four weeks sober, I attended an AA meeting at Augustana Hospital on Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. After listening to Ed Mann in that meeting, I screwed up the courage to ask him for help.
Ed guided, listened and shared many meetings, meals and friends, enriching my life while providing a quiet, undemanding friendship that only ended with his recent death.
His humor, warmth and honesty suggested that life could be well lived: he certainly was living proof.
I thank God for Ed Mann.
