Barbara Robertson Obituary

Barbara Hinners Robertson, a lifelong Winnetka resident, died peacefully in her home on March 11, 2021, age 95. Musical and athletic [she long was known as Bobby], she participated in music groups at New Trier H.S. and sang in the Winnetka Congregational Church choir for 85 years. She graduated from New Trier in June, 1944, and then Skidmore College, in 1948, majoring in music and education.

Barbara played field hockey and lacrosse in high school, college, and as a young adult, leading to a career as a physical education teacher, first at a private girls' school in Ohio, and later at the Lyon School in Glenview, IL, for 30 years. She extended her ability and interest in physical education and outdoor activities by service to the people of Winnetka, serving as commissioner of the Winnetka Park District Board from 1961 to 1967, including as a committee chair.

Barbara loved to travel and set foot on every continent. Her yen for adventure and experiencing different cultures and modes of travel extended to sleigh, bicycle, train, plane, mini-plane, car, bus, tram, ski (water and snow), river boat, canoe, motorboat, sailboat, skates, horse, camel, and elephant. But she passed on eating mopani worms in South Africa.

Ms. Robertson was married, once, to David H. Robertson. She later was a partner with another Winnetka resident, Jack M. Wells. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Gordon Hinners and Catherine Munson Hinners, and brothers, Gordon, Jr., and George. She is survived by her son, David H. Robertson, Jr., and daughter-in-law Jeanine M. Wall, and nieces and nephews. Her memorial will be celebrated at the Winnetka Congregational Church on January 15, 2022, 3:00pm, her 96th birthday. Reception to follow. The service will be live-streamed on the WCC YouTube channel.
