William Hutchinson Obituary

Hutchinson, William (Bill) Raymond

William (Bill) Raymond Hutchinson was born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland on October 9th, 1942 to Sarah (nee Haire) and George. He passed away peacefully at his home, accompanied by family in Chicago, Illinois on October 28th, 2022 at the age of 80. Bill was the only member of his class to earn entrance into the prestigious Foyle College high school. He was awarded a rare full scholarship to attend Trinity College in Dublin. Bill enrolled in the Honors program for Economics and Political Science, graduating first in his class of 1965. Upon graduation, Bill was hired by Shell Oil in London and continued his education at Cranfield College in Bedfordshire before being accepted into the Harvard MBA program as a second-year student. He arrived in Boston in 1967 with two suitcases and a small loan to help cover his tuition and living expenses. After graduating from Harvard, Bill moved to Chicago where he joined Standard Oil, later renamed Amoco. He began his career in the international division where he found himself traveling extensively for business in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. During the 1970's and 1980's he was selected for stints in Germany, Los Angeles, and Denver with Standard. Returning to Chicago in 1981, he became Treasurer of Standard Oil at a time when it was the eighth largest company in the U.S. by stock market value. Bill was instrumental in the Amoco and British Petroleum merger in 1998, and later held the position of British Petroleum's Group Vice President of Worldwide Mergers and Acquisitions until 2001. He then worked for Deutshe Bank and served as Chairman of the Board for Associated Bank and lead director on the boards of 25 publicly traded investment funds. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Joyce (Nee Jurkones-Breihan), daughters Katherine Turner (Gregory) of Glencoe, Illinois; Dr. Elizabeth Hutchinson-Payne (Michael) of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren Connor (14), Elsie (13) and Rhys (3); sister Patricia Bradley (Rodrick) of Guilford, Connecticut and nieces Amanda Bradley of Rome, Italy and Heather Bradley of Guilford, Connecticut.
