Wendy Ferris Obituary

Ferris, Wendy S. (nee Sands), 63, passed away May 21st. Daughter of the late Carl and Grace Sands of Glenview. Devoted wife of Don Ferris, loving mother of Corinne Rose, stepmother of David Ferris, dear sister of David (Watie) Sands and Stephan (Linda) Sands, cherished grandmother of Andrew and Jordan Ferris, fond aunt of Gillian Sands, Sara (Josh) Sands Mayo, Jonathan Sands, Matthew (Shannon) Westmore, and Jennifer Miner, dearest great aunt of Tessa Grace Mayo, Adyn Joseph McGinnis and Greyson Garret Westmore. Memorial visitation Saturday, 1 p.m. until time of life celebration service at 2 p.m. at N H Scott and Hanekamp Funeral Home, 1240 Waukegan Rd., Glenview, IL, 60025 (2 blocks South of Lake Ave.). Memorial contributions to your charity of choice would be appreciated. Wendy was a teacher at Wescott Elementary School in Northbrook for almost 30 years, and she taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades during her career. Her colleagues regarded her as a Golden Apple caliber teacher. Passionate, loving, and devoted, she sparked the desire for learning in each of her students. She liked to play classical music in her classroom to help students study. Past students would come up to her years after they had graduated just to say "hi" or to introduce her to their families, and to thank her for the wonderful learning experience they had in her classroom and she usually remembered their names, all those years later. Known for her fabulous gardens, her love of music, and entertaining family and friends, everyone was welcomed into her home. No one was to be excluded. She played the piano, flute and would sing. Wendy also would light up a room when she entered. She could walk into a room of 100 strangers and come out with 100 new friends. A world traveler, she lived in Germany before her daughter was born and traveled extensively throughout Europe, especially England, France and Germany. She loved to travel with her husband, especially to New England in the fall. They would stay at small Inns and enjoyed the fall foliage. Wendy developed a love for golf later in life. With Don as her teacher, wherever they traveled, there had to be a golf course in mind, and he loved it when she won the hole. A loving friend, and always with an eye for "presentation", Wendy would do things like bake soda bread on St. Patrick's Day and deliver it to all, with a tiny Irish flag in each piece, paticulary to friends who were ill or had fallen on hard times. A devoted student of Christian Science, Wendy was a tireless worker for her church. Wendy was very proud of her husband and daughter. A devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother aunt, great aunt, friend and teacher, Wendy will be missed by all those who knew her. For funeral info., 847-998-1020.

Mrs. Ferris meant a lot to me. One memory that always sticks with me goes back to when I was a fifth grader in her class at Wescott. She would read novels out loud and would have tears in her eyes if there were sad moments, or chuckle if there were hilarious scenes. I vividly recall how she never expected anything except the best out of her students. She prepared me for what was to come as good as any teacher could. Her dedication and care did not go unnoticed. My sincere condolences go out to Mrs. Ferris' friends and loved ones.
