John Doesn't want it known

December 27, 2013

My brother John sent me this as he recalls Father McCarthy. However, he did not want his email address sent. I cut and pasted it. Some of the people from Maryville will enjoy these memories from my brother about Father McCarthy.

Subject: Re: RIP Rev. Warren McCarthy

A couple of things I remember about Father McCarthy from my early years at Maryville - I was in 3rd grade - around 1953. The day the Wheeling Bank was robbed and the robbers crashed their car into the red posts by the villa driveway and they had to leave the car where it crashed. The cops looked for the bag of money in the middle of the field in the front of the Maryville villa and Beverly M. found a gun in her locker in one of the Maryville halls where girls lived (can't remember the name of the hall). Cops stayed out at the school all night, and Father McCarthy was interviewed on the radio at 6 p.m. by Len O'Connor.

The second thing was years later (I was in High School) and for the summer I was able to drive a tractor and cut grass around the school and also pull a wagon to pick up all the garbage and take it to the dump. Fr. McCarthy was staying at the villa for a few days . He had an old 1952 Chevy and as I was going around the curve in front of the villa I managed to put a dent in his fender with the wagon. I believe Father now knows, as he is in heaven, who put the dent in his car.

Just a great priest, I remember the day I met him for the first when I was a kid out at Maryville.....he welcomed me and ask me my name....I told him Art Contreras......he said "I won't forget your name and if I do, I'll give your a dime" .....days later he came up to me and said "Hello Art Contreras"....what's amazing about this, I was one of a thousand kids out there and he made it point to know all of our names. I never forgot that and I'll never forget Fr. McCarthy

In the name of all the Sisters of Providence of Montreal Canada, who had the pleasure of knowing Father McCarthy
from their early years at Maryville Academy, I want to offer my sincere condolence to the family.

Father was well appreciated and an inspiration for all of us by his attentive listening and by his compassionate heart,
his good humor and great respect for everyone.
So many wonderful memories remain with us and we will keep him and his family in our prayers. Being such a
wonderful man and a saintly priest, we know he is now receiving his eternal reward. Our joy is that we know we will be reunited someday.

I'll always remember Fr. McCarthy as the one who taught us "Knights of the Altar" how to serve mass, and he was a really swell person.

The very first time I heard Fr. Warren preach, one Sunday morning at St Marcelline, in 1978, was the first time I began to understand and love the " Kingdom of God". That changed my life forever, I have been seeking it ever since. He was the greatest preacher I have ever heard. He was the image of Jesus .

Fr. McCarthy,
I will never forget the kindness and patience you lent me when I made the most difficult decision of my life. You helped me understand that there was no failure contained in my realization that our lord had other plans for me than the priesthood. I was blessed by your wise counsel at St Mary of the Lake, Niles

Fr. Warren will be missed and remembered as one of the great preachers and pastors of an era that challenged people to find their center in prayer and spiritual life. Fr. Warren inspired other with his gift of encouragement and love for each person, seeing good in all. Fr. Warren inspired me in my academic pursuits and ministry, and I will always remember him and his sister, Sr. Marian, for their gift of hospitality and generous sharing of time and love at the Meditation Center. His frequent affirmation "God Love You" spoken many times, I now return to him, "God Love You" and bless you always! Rev. Dr. Marilyn Hendricks

Of all the priest I have known in my lifetime, Fr. McCarthy is the one I have the fondest memories of, he was a good-hearted servant of the Lord, and was gentle, open, and accessible to all of us who were at Maryville Academy in the 50's.

Father McCarthy's first assignment was to help care for some hundreds of children at Maryville Academy. Father McCarthy was there for the boys and girls through all the turns and twists that brought their paths together. It seems as though he was always meant to be a wonderful part of their lives as many of the alumni have kept in contact with him throughout their adult lives. Father was with them through their marriage vows, baptized their children and continued to serve as their counselor, teacher, spiritual leader and advisor.

Many of us alumni have the good memories of Father McCarthy as he was a great story teller. We remember him having his "black" pray book with him as he walked through the girls yard and there would be a trail of young girls following him to the "Villa" just to hear his stories. He was the gentle, good humor and humble priest who was an inspiration to many of the children he served at Maryville.

We just know that Father McCarthy's spirit is resting in the palm of God's hand and God is listening to one of his many stories and enjoying Father McCarthy's Irish humor and his laughter. We know (as he has taught us) that his spirit is experiencing the so well deserved sense of peace as he is enjoying the Beatific Vision. As members of the MV family, please remember this great guy Father McCarthy in your prayers and ask the Lord to give his many priest friends and his family comfort to guide them through this sad time in their lives.
