Walter Stevens Obituary

Walter D. Stevens SPARTANBURG - Walter D. Stevens, son of Walter D. Stevens, Sr. and Eloise Rogers Stevens, died suddenly May 6, 2015, at the home of daughter Brenda S. Wykel of Roebuck after a period of declining health following the death of his wife, Dorothy Swinney Stevens, on December 1, 2014. He was born in Poplar Springs, SC, in 1927 and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He worked at Startex Mills as a doffer before becoming a TV repairman for Montgomery Ward in Spartanburg in the 1960s. He retired after running Stevens' Electronics during the 1960s to 1980s. For many years, he was an avid HAM radio operator known to his friends as KD4YN. He was also a past master of the AFM lodge of Startex, SC. He is survived by daughter, Brenda M. Stevens (Richard) Wykel of Roebuck, son, James L. (Bonnie E.) Stevens of Irmo, SC, and grandson, Kevin Wykel of Roebuck, SC. In addition, he leaves a brother, Charles [Gwen] Stevens of Taylors, SC, sister, Virginia (Boyce) Swinney of Spartanburg, SC, as well as half brother, Mitchell, and half sister, Judy. His temporal shell has been donated to medical research in the same manner as his wife's. His spirit will be with us all forever. A memorial service for the family will be arranged at a future date. Memorials may be sent to Spartanburg Humane Society in lieu of flowers. Many thanks to the caring staffs of Magnolia Manor of Inman and MEDI HOME Hospice of Spartanburg.
