When I was 8 years old, I was awakened in the middle of the night to an electrifying and emotional version of Chopin's Military Polonaise being played on our piano downstairs. My parents were giving a party and Walter had just amazed a houseful of enraptured guests with his outstanding performance. I crept downstairs and met the man who I would consider for the next 45 years to be one of the most charasmatic, charming, talented and heart felt people I would know. He epitomized a true "Rennaissance" man. Musician, artist, lawyer, Marine, scholar, and ornithologist- were but a few of Walter's defining characteristics. He was kind, compassionate and the best listener I have ever met. It was no wonder at my wedding, 30 years ago, his dear wife, Vivian said to me while offering advise on marital bliss, "I would iron Wallie's socks if he wanted me to." Vivian, I never doubted you. He's yours for all eternity and those of us left behind will never see another one like him.
