Vernita Gray Obituary

Vernita is the only person I will strive to emulate. She was the epitome of who I want and need to be, not only as a queer, black, woman; but as a human being. Miss you Vee.

Thank you Vernita for your pioneering spirit and activism that helped our community grow. I remember our days of collaboration when I worked at Horizions Community Services and our focus on youth and building cross cultural relationships across the Chicago community. Peace be with you always and with Pat, your family and extended family.

Rest in peace, Vernita. My thoughts are with all who loved her. I knew Vernita in the 80s from Mountain Moving Coffee House and our social circle of friends. She was always a bright spirit and light along the way. She still is.

Vernita was a very kind, loving person. My sister is very lucky to have had such a wonderful person in her life. We will miss you, Vernita. Rest in peace

I remember reading an article last year about Vernita & Pat in the Sun-times, I was very excited for them. Just the other day for some reason Vernita & Pat ran across my mind & I was wondering whatever happened to them. Again im reading the newspaper & this time I ran across Vernitas death notice. To her wife, family & friends I would like to say that you have my deepest sympathies

I knew Vernita from the very beginning of the Gay Pride movement and every moment of those years was filled with veritable pride and activism on Vernita's part. Moreover, she was a deep-feeling and loving person and friend. She was helpful and kind to those she knew and to strangers, as well. She touched us all deep within our hearts. I didn't know Vernita but I followed the marriage equality fight in Illinois and was glad Vernita and Pat were allowed to marry before the "official" date of marriage in June.

I wish Vernita had lived longer to enjoy her marriage, but she must have died knowing she fought the good fight, for Pat and for others. God Speed, Vernita

Amazing!! I've never heard of Ms gray and her efforts that seem to have set a things in motion and in place even before needed. Having accomplished this before and impending death makes you wonder about the theory of Prescience. As for her cause I've no opinion except that it made a lot of people happy. Cesar wants people to legally marry. Cesar should be pleased. Rest Well Ma'am. You've will never be forgotten

V is at peace now. She touched so many with her assiduous activism. I'm glad I had a chance to work with her when I was a crime victim advocate. She was a great and fun-loving person.
