Vernita is the only person I will strive to emulate. She was the epitome of who I want and need to be, not only as a queer, black, woman; but as a human being. Miss you Vee.

I remember reading an article last year about Vernita & Pat in the Sun-times, I was very excited for them. Just the other day for some reason Vernita & Pat ran across my mind & I was wondering whatever happened to them. Again im reading the newspaper & this time I ran across Vernitas death notice. To her wife, family & friends I would like to say that you have my deepest sympathies

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.. We join with all of you in celebrating the life and legacy of our friend Vernita. To Pat and family may God hold you on this day and the days that comes. I knew Vernita from the very beginning of the Gay Pride movement and every moment of those years was filled with veritable pride and activism on Vernita's part. Moreover, she was a deep-feeling and loving person and friend. She was helpful and kind to those she knew and to strangers, as well. She touched us all deep within our hearts. I will miss her spirit and her loving-kindness. May G-d rest her soul. From, Harriet Baker

I didn't know Vernita but I followed the marriage equality fight in Illinois and was glad Vernita and Pat were allowed to marry before the "official" date of marriage in June.

I wish Vernita had lived longer to enjoy her marriage, but she must have died knowing she fought the good fight, for Pat and for others. God Speed, Vernita

Amazing!! I've never heard of Ms gray and her efforts that seem to have set a things in motion and in place even before needed. Having accomplished this before and impending death makes you wonder about the theory of Prescience. As for her cause I've no opinion except that it made a lot of people happy. Cesar wants people to legally marry. Cesar should be pleased. Rest Well Ma'am. You've will never be forgotten

Life Without End—At Last!
(John 3:16)

Can you see, with your mind's eye,
Peoples dwelling together?
Sorrow has passed. Peace at last!
Life without tears and pain.

Man and beast, living in peace,
Cause no harm to each other.
Food will be there. All will share
In what our God provides.

In those days old will grow young,
Flesh revived as in childhood.
Troubles are gone, from now on
No need to weep or fear.

Paradise all will enjoy
As they sing of God's glory.
Yes, ev'ry day we will say
To God our Maker, “Thanks!”

Sing out with joy of heart.
You too can have a part.
Live for the day when you'll say:
‘Life without end—at last!'
