Valerie Brew-Parrish Obituary

Brew-Parrish, Valerie 63, of Plainfield, suddenly Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at home. Born in Chicago to the late Sydney W. and Bernice (Kennedy) Brew, she retired from Southern Illinois University. A disability rights activist and accomplished author and columnist. Beloved wife to Richard "Rick" Parrish; loving mother to Tara Parrish; devoted grandmother to Matthew Lawrence and Keith Robert; fond brother to Lee (the late Patricia) Brew; and aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded by her parents; one sister, Phyllis B. (Dennis) Curtin; and one brother, Robert Brew. A Memorial Visitation will be held Sunday, July 13, 2014 from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet. A Memorial Service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Interment will be private. Memorials in her name to Post-Polio Health International, 4207 Lindell Blvd., #110, Saint Louis, MO 63108-2930 or Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Veterans Support Group, P. O. Box 4132, Joliet, IL 60434-4132 (for the purpose of erecting a statue in honor of President Lincoln) would be appreciated. I will always remember the first time I met you both during the times I volunteered for the youth summits and at ccdi conferences you both are a great inspiration to people with disabilites.
