Tombol Malik Obituary

Malik, Tombol a gentle, devoted and loving son, brother and friend, had his life abruptly cut short on July 9, 2005. He was 23 years old. As a young boy, Tombol memorized the names of cities in countries across the world. As a young man, he enjoyed traveling and had recently visited Brazil, Ireland and Egypt. Tombol was a political science major at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a budding photographer who planned to study in Germany. The youngest child of an American mother and Sudanese father, Tombol grew up in the Chicago community of Hyde Park with Shiera (32), Sati (31) and Samil (27)—older siblings who doted on him. He graduated from Ray Elementary School and Kenwood Academy High School and played for years on the Hyde Park-Kenwood baseball team. He was a lifelong White Sox fan and had high hopes for this baseball season. He also loved literature and going out dancing with his friends—many of whom he had known his entire life. His untimely death has left a void in the hearts of all who knew him. He is survived by his mother, Karen Brobst, father, Sharafuddin Mohamed Hamad Al-Malik, his brothers and sister, and a large extended family. A multi-faith funeral service for Tombol will be held Thursday, July 21, at 12 noon, at A.A. Rayner & Sons, 318 E. 71st Street in Chicago, 773.846-6133. All are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a fund being established in Tombol's name. Details will be available soon at the on-line tribute to Tombo:

Dear Malik Family, You do not know me, but I saw you on the news, and my heart breaks for you. I can't imagine the despair you are enduring now.Your Tombol seemed to be a truly special young man, a gentle, loving person. To lose him like this is unthinkable. My family lost our youngest brother one year ago, he died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 35. I have often thought that the only worse thing would have been for him to be deliberately taken from us. When I saw your pain in the news, my heart just broke for you. Please know that you are being thought of , and prayed for;please just try to hold on to the thought that your adored son and brother is still with you in your hearts, and with our Creator, happy where he is. You will see him again. Please take care of each other, and remain strong. So very sorry, Mary Ellen McFee

Dear Malik Family, I am no relation or friend but saw your son/brothers senseless death on the evening news. It caught my attention more because he resembles my son. Please know that his death will come with some resolution. Their consciences will be the worst part for them. May God bless you at this terrible point in all of your lives and God speed to Tombol.

Sincerely, Cathy P.
