On an October day some years ago, I received a package in the mail from my Dad. I wasn't expecting anything, but in those days, he and my mother were often sending presents to their newest baby granddaughter, Allie. I opened the package thinking I'd find a toy or a cute little dress. What I found took my breath away. Gently wrapped inside th box were a stack of leaves. The brightly colored leaves of Chicago trees in autumn. You see, I had talked with my Dad the week before about how much I missed a really colorful fall season, because I live in Denver, where it's just not the same. And he really listened to me. He really cared that much. He went outside and collected the prettiest leaves he could find and he sent them to Denver. That was my Dad. I still have those now fragile leaves. Whenever I come across them, I feel very loved. Thank you Dad.

Thank you for a whole life time of extraordinary devotion. Not just to me, but to all of us lucky enough to know you. Your gentle good nature was a true gift. You'd always find the little joke or the gadget, or the way to help that was special for the people you cared about. If you could build it or fix-it, all the better. And you delivered it all with a twinkle in your eye.

As a young man, you were so proud to be the strong one who would give all of us children a rollicking good time and who could carry what needed carrying or simply DO whatever needed doing. As an old man, you never lost the spark and desire to be the strong, energetic helper. At 90 years of age, your heart and soul was that of a much younger man's stuck in an old man's body. How we all wish your body hadn't failed you! We so miss the special man with sparkle who never gave up trying to make us smile and help us out. Because he cared so much. We cared right back, Dad. You're living forever in our hearts: Big and Srong and always Gentle.
