I never knew until I came to live in River Grove that Mayors like Tom really existed. I thought they existed only in happy movies. He was a great mayor and a great example for many people including myself. He will be remembered for many, many years to come. Hopefully our future leaders will lead as he did...with compassion, kindness and love. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Tarpey family.

Dear Shawn, John, Tom and Chrissy

I was very saddened to hear of the death of your father, Tom was a great friend and a co-worker. My heart goes out to you and your families. Tom was a great man, a great mayor, and of course a great father and the best father for the Village of River Grove. As you know I had the sincere pleasure of working with Tom for many years until i retired from the police department and will never forget those moments and stories he told to us. I will always remember him.

With deepest regrets, God Bless

To the Tarpey Family,

My deepest condolences for your loss, I didn’t know him well. The few times I had met and talked with him, to me, he seemed to be a stand up and righteous man who took the time to listen. In talking with people and his name came up…nothing but good things were said. He was a good man and he will be missed.

There are so many memories of Tom - He and my dad used to sit together at Blackhawk games for years - my mom and dad had his first 3 meetings in our backyard when he thought about running for Mayor - what a turnout! I'll always remember him driving around in his convertible stopping and talking to everyone! In fact my dad and I just talked to him about 4 weeks ago out front of our house (just days before my mom passed away)and he told us he was running again - and that he would die in office. Now he is with so many of our loved ones in a better place where there is no suffering, no pain, just peace. My deepest sympathy for Tom's family - he will be missed. He was Mr. River Grove and always will be. He really improved our village - thanks Tom for all you've done for us all.

God bless you

We are so saddened by the loss of Tom Tarpey. We are honored to have known this wonderful man!

10 yrs ago when my husband and I opened our business in town, Tom showed us why River Grove is known as "the village of friendly neighbors". We are going to miss seeing him drive through town always a smile and kind word...

I also have the privilege of being the current president of the River Grove Chamber of Commerce. Tom began our Chamber in 1985 and was always very supportive of us and our needs. All of River Grove is going to miss him deeply.

God Bless you, Tom. Our hearts go out to the Tarpey family, we will keep you in our prayers.

Having lived in River Grove my entire childhood I remember Mayor Tarpey as a very friendly person. He would always stop and say Hello to people, even kids. He was definately a mayor of the people. He made a commitment to make each and every resident of River Grove to feel at home. He made this small town west of Chicago truly a Village of Friendly Neighbors. It was a pleasure to serve as an auxilliary police officer during his time as mayor. He will be missed by hundreds of people. He touched so many lives that his memory will live on forever. My condolences and prayers are with his family and the entire Village of River Grove in their time of sorrow.

WORDS WILL NEVER EXPRESS THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY FELT BY ME ON THE LOSS OF TOM TARPEY. AS A FORMER RESIDENT, I KNOW HOW MUCH HE LOVED RIVER GROVE AND WAS SO PROUD TO BE THE MAYOR. HE DID GOOD BY THE TOWN AND MADE IT A "MAYBERRY ATMOSPHERE". THE TOWN HAS LOST A GREAT MAN.

NOW, TO THE FAMILY OF TOM, MAY I SAY HOW SO VERY, VERY SORRY I AM AT THE LOST OF YOUR FATHER, GRANDPA, BROTHER, UNCLE.

TOM WAS A NICE, WARM, COMPASSIONATE AND THOUGHTFUL MAN WHO WANTED NOTHING MORE THAN TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY. HE DID WELL. I AM SO GLAD THAT I WAS ABLE TO BE LIVING IN RIVER GROVE WHEN TOM WAS MAYOR. HE WILL BE MISSED GREATLY.
