Thomas Smith Obituary

Smith, Thomas G

On November 27, 2023 Thomas Gerald Smith, 79, died from heart complications. He is survived by his beloved wife Pauline and their many children and grandchildren.

Born in 1944 and raised on the West Side of Chicago, Tom maintained his love for the city throughout his life. Tom had a boisterous Chicago charm and was not shy about sharing his thoughts. This served him well in future careers in real estate and as a safety engineer focusing on the amusement park industry. Tom had an encyclopedic knowledge of American roller coasters and enjoyed traveling and "walking the tracks" as part of his work. Family vacations were often spent enjoying a new park together.

Tom was an Air Force Veteran and credited his service time with helping him mature after a sometimes difficult upbringing. He learned valuable lessons about responsibilty and the importance of not volunteering. After leaving the Air Force he met the love of his life, Pauline Smith nee Dokmo. He proved his devotion by walking from Chicago to Wood Dale during the great Chicago blizzard of 1967. They were married in 1968 and went on to have four wonderful children.

During the second part of his life Tom moved to Seattle and explored that part of the world. He had a lively social life and enjoyed being a part of the neighborhood and creating Halloween yard spectacles that some described as "spooky" and "way too terrifying for children".

Tom had a lively sense of humor and loved music, especially Frank Sinatra and his classic "My Way". He was a staunch and long-suffering Cubs fan and was thrilled by their eventual 2016 World Series victory.

Tom is survived by his wife Pauline and children David (Stacey), Michael (Sara), Lisa (Adam) and Robin (Scott) and Grandchildren Bella, Thea, Alex, Olivia and Oona. Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in Tom's name. A celebration of life will be held at a later date with details provided to friends and family.

He will be missed.
