I am so shocked to read about Tommy's death. My deepest and most heart-felt sympathies go out to Alice as well as their children and grandchildren.

I remember Tommy Mayer quite well. His mom and dad, Mary and Henry, lived just two houses down from us in Hegewisch, on 130th Avenue. I vividly recall wonderful memories about Mary and Henry, Tommy's parents, who where treasured friends of my parents, Anna and Frank Forystek. I also remember what a school girl's crush I had on their son, Tommy. I can vividly recall the day he enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to the U.S.S. Vogelgesang. I still have the postcard he sent me of his ship after his assignment. That picture is on the first page of my teenage album and is dated 1963. I was only 13 years old and Tommy must have been at least 21 or 22 years old. I will never forget how special he treated me at such an early age in my life.

Alice, your children and your grandchildren, know that your husband, father, grandfather left treasured footprints in my life. He was a very special man. I will never forget him.
