Thomas Hughes Obituary

19 years and yet it seems like yesterday that we lost a really fine man and outstanding outstanding police leader. Even today when the old retired Gang South officers get together he is always spoken about with laughs and deep respect.

I just found the obituary of your dad - I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Hughes was a great man who left a beautiful legacy in his children. The Hughes family is an intricate part of the fabric of my childhood - I had great respect for Mr. Hughes and admired the beautiful love between Mr. & Mrs. Hughes - even as a child, I knew it was special. Please accept my sincere condolences . Tom was an inspiational leader and a fine gentleman. I enjoyed working for him many years ago. In recent years I enjoyed visiting with him in the 008th District when I made the rounds as the street deputy.

I worked under Tom in the 1st District. He was truly one of "Chicago's finest", respected and admired by all. I just heard about his death, please accept my heartfelt sympthy.

Just heard the news this past weekend. So sorry for your loss.

My condolences to the Hughes family. My prayers and sympathy are with you at this time. I have so many memories of Tom, regarding the Bulls and Blackhawk games. And it was through those games that I met his family. Peace to all of you at this time.

Tom was my first tact.sergeant in the 001st District back in the 70's. I enjoyed working with very much and have always admired him.

I just learned this tragic news. My condolences to Tom’s family. I first met Tom on June 8th 1964 when we both raised our hands to be sworn in, Class 64-2A. After the Training Academy we never worked together, but we ran across each other often. I thought of him as a friend, a great policeman and an all around great guy. He will be missed.

The original gang crimes unit was the best unit in the history of the CPD thanks to Tom Hughes. Tom, say hi to Minter and the rest of the gang guys that are no longer with us, I'm sure that we will all meet again one day...

Even before we hit the street, Tom was recognized as the "Class Commander." He was recognized as such throughout his entire career. He will be missed by all that had the opportunity to know and work with him.

Dear Hughes Family: Please accept my deepest sympathy on the sudden loss of such a vital man. I worked for Tom when he was a sergeant in the 1st Dist in 1970. I learned a great deal from him during my young years as a policewoman. I was fortunate enough to be filling in at the 8th District on his last night of work before retiring. He was a good man and good policeman.
