Thomas Hester Obituary

Hester, Thomas J. Thomas J. Hester, age 82, passed away on April 25, 2020. From his birth in Chicago, on February 9, 1938 to his death he affected every person he met with his humor, pure joy, and unconditional love and acceptance. He was born on the west side of Chicago to Patrick and Julia (Grealis) Hester and was the oldest of three boys. Tom served in the US Army and upon release, pursued his talent as a painter and entrepreneur, founding Hester Painting & Decorating in 1968. His eye for color and vision for design were unmatched. An avid softball player into his 50's, his team, the DieHards, were propelled to multiple championships by his spectacular pitching skills and the talent and competitive nature of his four sons who joined him on the field. Tom will affectionately always be remembered as Handsome Tom Hester (HTH). He was preceded in death by his son, Danny (9/29/01), and survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Marianne, nee Freibert; sons, Jeff (Julie), Tom (Jenny) and Steve (Heather); 14 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. A private funeral service and interment will be held. A public Memorial Mass at St. Peter Catholic Church, Skokie, will be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Tom's memory to Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, 1140 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, IL, 60607; www.donate.mercyhome.org. Funeral information: 847-673-6111 or www.habenfuneral.com to sign guestbook.

Victor Nieblas (daughter Esther)

June 29, 2020

My name is Esther - the daughter of Victor Nieblas, a Cuban immigrant that came to Chicago in 1967. This evening my dad is reminiscing his days of working with Tom in early 1970. I just went online to check on the family name and came across the sad news of his loss. My father has fond memories of the years he worked with Tom, and his team. I remember as a child meeting Tom and as a little 5/6 year old remembered him to be a very nice person and boss to my dad.. My father and I are both saddened for this loss. Our sincere condolences.

Tom will always have a special spot in my heart and mind. A person
who did his job with Joy and the highest level of expertise. On my first project with Hester Decorating the job was completed and approved. As I was packing up in comes Tom. He surveyed the room and decided there were some spots not to his standards, before we knew it he had his crew making the improvements ( which we hadn't even noticed). That exemplified the man who brought the Best to all he did usually with a smile or story.
He will be missed by many but his legacy will shine on.

Tom Hester will be sorely missed. His smile, joy, jokes, kindness, integrity, love of family, and easy going manner were unequaled. He made my husband a better person. We are where we are because of him. He was always ready to lend a helping hand in any way he could and he never expected anything in return. Tom had a great life and he enjoyed it. The world is truly dimmer without him in it. I love you Tom!
