Tommy,
16 yrs have come and gone. Yet, you are still remembered. You are remembered because of the man you were, the example you set, and the love that you chose to display.
You were a great Marine, but you were an amazing person. Whether that mischievous smile, bringing joyful wonder and anticipation, or the heartfelt stories of family, friends, and the passions of your life, there was always hope and optimism, radiating from your very being.
God gained a fine warrior, in Heaven. We lost an amazing brother, too soon!
Semper Fidelis, brother!

Hey bud. I really miss you man. Every month or so, you pop into my dreams and we're on an adventure together.
Maybe it's ripping around on our bikes...with too big engines or us doing the work on the trails of Palos. Sometimes we're out picking up chicks in that bar that saw many our shadow. Hell, it could even be us being the outcasts of the football team. Those dudes that would put everything we could into it, but only end up on the kickoffs.
I wish you were here to tell me the crazy adventures you've been up to. I wish you were here so I can tell you the crazy adventures I've been up to. I wish we could have those adventures together.
You are never forgotten. Your loss changed everything for more people than you could even imagine. My whole world changed in an instant when I found out you were killed. It was the only thing that mattered, everything else could be clearly seen in the trivial nature that it truly was. Your loss laid bare the fragile existence we have and I genuinely hope others paid heed.
I write this, 15 years later, with the biggest tears running down my checks since the gun salute at your funeral. I want you to know that you have made a difference, and that you still affect peoples lives, hopefully for the better.
Hey bud. I really miss you man. See you in a dream soon.

I knew Tom in high school through track & field, and I think about him every year around this time. It been over ten years now since his death, but I will always remember him as a thoughtful, outgoing, charismatic young man -- full of energy, optimism and a great sense of humor. I'm grateful for his service to our country and wish I could tell him so today. He was a truly quality person, and I can't help but wonder what he would be doing today. Thank you to the Gilbert family for raising a fine man.

Being so far away, in the Seattle area, we were delayed in finding out about Thomas passing on to heaven and just now found this guest book. Please know that we care deeply for you and can't imagine how devastating it must have been and continues to be for you. We are praying that the memories will comfort you, like a warm blanket on a cold bitter night. We found a quote "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die." Thomas Campbell.

This is a late entry but I had the opportunity of working with Tom on a civilian level. He was a Marine reserve at the time. I am a supervisor for a contract security organization. Gilbert Family, Tom, thanks for your service and ultimate sacrifice, I met your Dad at Wild Fire Harley at an event and after we chatted, he offered me one of your patches which I had put on my leather coat so you can ride the harley with me! We have gone many miles. Thru unforseen circumstances I am going on a run with the Patriot rider group on sunday and I thought of you. I looked on their webpage and there was pics of all the bikers who came to honor and respect you. My Gilbert,I would love to talk to you again, Please email [email protected]

Tommy,
I never had the chance to talk to you or see your smile, but I knew the people that loved you the most, and were so sad when you left us. I lost a friend on Feb. 20th to the war, and in this respect, I want to thank you for your service, and the honor that you provided for your country. You are truly a hero, and I am sorry I never got to tell you this you while you were here. May you rest in heaven and look down on those that love you the most, as they look up at you.

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Dear family of Sgt. Thomas M. Gilbert,
We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. We are all safer because young men and women who love their country, and know the value of a free nation, are willing to put themselves in harms way, and lay down their lives to keep this nation free and safe for all of us.
Your sacrifice is also very great. We know that we can give little comfort; however, the knowledge that your loved one did not die in vain, but died in the service of our country, gives each of us a noble example of the value of life, and the responsibility of freedom. We hope this will bring pride and comfort to you.
We at Gethsemane Church believe that there is purpose to life. We send this letter with our deepest appreciation for the greatest of sacrifices, you and your loved one have given to this country. We know it is not enough, but please allow us to assure you that your loved one is not forgotten.
Very Sincerely

Mr. & Mrs. Gilbert and Family,
I have not yet posted an entry on this page, reason being I still have yet to find the right words to tell you how sorry I am about Tommy. I'm sure you don't remember me...I knew Tommy. I have a lot of great memories of him. Him and my brother actually were on the same Football team at DG North- I grew up on Highland Ave. and my mom and I were talking about how we use to watch Tommy and my Brother walk home from football practice...Just one of the memories that I have from Tommy. It's funny that in later years Tommy and my brother would both walk down the same path and both become Marines. I can't even begin to explain how proud I am to say that I know both of them...That I was able to know Tommy. To this day are NO words that I can even begin to tell you how proud I am. I want to Thank the both of you though- My entire family would like to....Tommy was an amazing man and a great friend. You both did an amazing thing with him. And again I will say that there are no words that I can even begin to express How much I am Thankful that I had a moment to actually know your son. He has become a saint in my book. He I believe saved my brother. I have put myself in your shoes for well a long time now and my brother served in Iraq and I can't even begin to tell your family Thank you and How soory I am. Coming from a family of Marines and service men there will never be any words that I could hear that would be able to put any of it in to words...So Thank you, Thank you for allowing your son to be one of the few and proud because I know that I will always be proud of him - and He is still the best of the best!!! There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

The soldier stood and faced his God
Which must always come to pass
He hoped his shoes were shining
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"
The soldier squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't
Because those of us who carry guns
Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays
And at times my talk was tough,
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep,
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here,
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God,
"Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well,
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."
To all that serve ...

“Paid in Full”
In Honor of The War Against Terrorism’s Fallen and Injured Marines
Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full
We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward
What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our minds we will cherish your lives
Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the few, the proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us
They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown
Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

I am the wife of a Texas Marine that is attached to 1/24. Some of our Marines have not only lost a Brother in Arms, but have also lost a friend they had become close to.
I'm sure I can speak for the rest of the families here that we were saddened to hear the news about the death of Sgt. Gilbert.
Please know that our thoughts are with you and your loved ones during this time of loss. You are in our prayers and may your heart mend and your memories stay strong.
You have more strength and courage than you may realize now, but I see it as it was inherited by your brave son and know that it is that great strength, family and friends that will help you at this time of loss.
Remember that "Those who live in the hearts of others never die."

To Thomas's family and friends-
My family and I are praying for you and your family during this difficult time. We send our deepest empathy as we lost our Marine on 11/30/05 in Fallujah. We are comforted to know that our Marines are serving their country with such honor and bravery. We are so proud of our Marines and all of our other service men and women for all that they have done and continue to do to keep us safe and to give us the freedom we have that so many take for granted.
They are true Heroes and need to always be remembered for their selflessness and sacrifice to better our world. We will forever be united in the loss of our heros. We are so sorry for your loss and hope our words will ease some of the pain, and maybe fill some of your emptiness.

To the Gilberts,
I cant say that you all will remember me but my name is Greg Birch. I was on the track team with Tom at North. I currently am in the Air Force and stationed out in Texas. I was told the news from my mom recently and cannot begin to express my sympathies. Tom is a great hero even though he wouldnt say so. I am at a loss of words because to me its a loss of a brother in arms. I wish you all the best even in these down times and again I am very sorry.

Mike and Terri,
I don't know if you remember me. I am Bobbie Abare, friend of Andrews mom Robin Music. I met you in Grand Rapids for the family day the Marines held, then we all went to lunch. That was the first time I met Tommy. What an honor to say the least. I can't tell you how hearbroken we all are here in Michigan. That day, when I hugged all those boys goodbye and said stay safe. I really wanted to believe that would be the case. I feel so priveledged to have met you and your wonderful son. I hurt for you, I hurt for Andrew, I truly hurt for anyone that is going through what you are experiencing right now. To know that you and your family mean so much to Andrew, makes it hurt that much more. As a parent, our kids always make us proud, you can't get any prouder than this. Please know, through Tommys friendship with Andrew, there is a magnitude of people on this end that are praying for your family. I believe in the power of prayer and hope that with that comes some comfort. We will continue to pray for you. May God bless you, and comfort you.
Until we meet again
Bobbie

Dear Gilbert Family,
Even though we have never met, I feel as if we are a part of a "family". My daughter's fiancee was killed in Iraq by an IED on Oct. 3, 2005. It is my prayer that you will feel God holding you as close to His heart as He has held my family this past year. May you feel His comfort and peace as you travel down this difficult road.

Mike, Terry, and family:
I wanted to express my deepest sympathy to your family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Mike and Terry, I have known you for 10 years now through our business relationship. I had only met Tommy once. Mike, I can think of so many times when you spoke of Tommy with such pride.
Parents should not have to feel a loss as deep as this. Please know I thank God every day for people like Tommy. Men and women who lay down their lives for my protection and freedom. Tommy is a true hero.
I am truly sorry you had to lose him so soon. I believe he is in a wonderful place and eternally grateful that he is your son.
May God Bless you and give you strength and peace in your days ahead.

To the Family of Thomas M. Gilbert, I was one of the Patriot Guard Riders who escorted your funeral party through your neighberhood on our way to the burial site at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetary. I was struck by all of the people who stood by the roadsides, in memory and respect for your son. My thoughts will always drift back to the many elementary school children, running from inside their classrooms, eager to get to the roadside to stand in rememberance of Tom. They boldly held flags and other papered artifacts depicting our country's colors. It will be an image I will always cherish as a lasting memory in my heart and in my mind. Although I never personally knew your son, I have a better sense of him as I watched his neighbors and friends, as they expressed their deep feelings of support and respect for your him, and all that he accomplished in his life. The experience although sad, was so inspirational as well. I feel sad for your loss, yet I am so very proud of your son. When I get to heaven I will thank him personally!

I have known him since we were about 8 or 10 years old. We went to school together, played football together and had a hell of a time doing it. He was a good person to know and a great teammate also. He will be missed but his memory will live on forever!!!
