Thomas Cahill Obituary

Cahill, Thomas Patrick 84, passed away Friday, June 15, surrounded by his family. Born on May 8, 1923 in Chicago to Irish parents hailing from County Kerry, Ireland, Tom was one of 11 children. He was a Golden Gloves middleweight boxing champion and served in the US Navy during World War II. As a 35 year veteran of the Chicago Police Department stationed at O'Hare Airport for many years, he was assigned to special details escorting dignitaries and celebrities. With the love of his life, Peggy, who preceded him in death, he had four children Margaret Mary (George Concordia), Kathleen (Michael Lemme), Colleen (Nick Scipione), and Thomas Jr. (Bridgette). He was a devoted and loving grandfather to Meaghan, Nicholas, Kevin, Zachary, Brian, Alex, Margaret Ann, Sean, Brigit, Jack, Thomas III, and Caitlin and his great-grandson Liam. He was our storyteller and our protector. He was our coach and our cheering section. He was our inspiration. Funeral Tuesday, June 19, at 9:15 a.m., from Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home, 8025 W. Golf Road, Niles, to St. Paul of the Cross Church, Mass 10 a.m. Interment All Saints. Visitation Monday, 3 to 9 p.m. Info 847-581-0536 or www.colonialfuneral.com

With sympathy from the Byrne family. My dad, Joe Byrne, worked with Mr. Cahill at O’Hare. My dad passed away in 1999. My mom still resides in California in failing health, so I am sending this note on her behalf. I have forwarded a copy of the obituary to her. Our condolences to the Cahill family.

Your Dad (Big Tom) will be with you forever in your humor, your smile and your kindness. His heart and personality always made me feel like a million bucks. We hope you can all make the Mass that we will have him remembered at - Old St Pats Church, Chicago, September 16, 2007. Our prayers and love to you all. God Bless.

Please accept my deepest sympathies. As one who worked with Tom at O'Hare, we had a lot of respect for each other. He was a good man.

Meg and Family,
Some would say the amount of time that I've spent with Gramps would not qualify me as a person who knew him very well. Besides a game of pool we shared a few years ago (I still owe him that fin) my interaction with him was brief. It was through Meg's retelling of his stories that I really knew the man. The stories were bountiful and always a riot to listen to.
Meg, because of you I know Gramps and I'm really glad I do. Not only because of the great stories he had, but because he made you so happy. Through you, he made me happy. He was someone I admired because of the commitment he had for his family.
I love and respect Gramps, and know that he's still looking over you. He wouldn't have it any other way.
Love always,
Julie
