I was sorry to hear of the loss of your Dad today.I was reading up on Chicago news when I saw an article about him and his passing. I never knew what blinded your Dad (it wasn't my place to ask)When I read the article and it explained it, I realized the couple of times I saw and spoke to your dad I was in the presence of a real Hero. How proud you must be of him. Again my sympathy goes out to you and your family.

I was not surprised to learn that Mr. Broderick was a graduate of St. Ignatius, where the Jesuits have been building "men for others" in the vision of Ignatius Loyola for some 150 years. Mr. Broderick's whole life emobodied the Ignatian vision. He was truly a "man for others." On behalf of the entire Barrett family, I thank you for your service to our country and our neighborhood.

My sincere condolences for your loss. I only know of Thomas through the wonderful book, appropriately titled "The Greatest Generation." Being lucky enough to be a child of that generation, I know that though his passing is a great loss, his life was such a great gift to all Americans.

Aunt Eileen and Family
From one branch of the Minnesota Desmonds, Kathleen’s family, please accept our deepest sympathy on your loss. We got to know Kathleen’s Uncle Tom mainly through family stories and all too brief meetings at the Lake. In this life, we seldom meet heroes anymore. Tom was a hero, not only because of his service to his country during the war, but by his service to his family and community for so many years.
Tom Brokaw’s book pointed out what all of us already knew – that Tom, Jack Desmond, Bob Short and hundreds of their friends and acquaintances were all heroes. They did extraordinary things and made huge sacrifices in the service of their country. They also did ordinary things, made equally significant sacrifices, all in the service of their families. We are all better because of this love, commitment and sacrifice. We honor them by never forgetting.
Sincerely
Brian, Kathleen, Kathryn, Robert & Michael Short

We remember our favorite story of Mr. Broderick - He went to Lourdes to pray for new eyes and God sent him Eileen. Our Lady of Lourdes called Tom home on her feast day - now indeed he has new eyes to care for Eileen and his whole family. May all of us be men and women of character and hope as he was! Love from the Malones/Maiers in Denver.

Dear Eileen and family,
I am Father James Chambers, S.J.
I graduated from Ignatius with Tom in the year 1942. Tom was a good friend. I met him at many of the St. Ignatius alumni gatherings.
I was a missionary in Kathmandu, Nepal (next to India) for 25 years, so I lost track of our Iggie clasmates for those years (1957 to 1983).
Tom was a generous man. For example, he was the class correspondant, collecting news about the class of 1942 to be printed in the alumni newspaper.
Tom deservedly was a member of the Greatest Generation. The fact that Tom carried the CROSS of blindness for 60 years is an inspiration. I feel sure that Our Lord , who suffered very much in His life, has welcomed Tom to a great reward in Heaven.
And you, Eileen, deserve much credit for your 60 years of caring for Tom and his handicap. As the Bible says "I was sick and you cared for me. Enter into your heavenly reward."
I am sorry that I cannot come to the Mass on Tuesday, because I will be working as a chaplain at the Stroger Cook County hospital Tuesday. I will offer the noon Mass at the hospital forTom and Eileen.
God bless you always.

Mr. Broderick was my Dad's best friend. My Dad told me stories after Mr. Broderick was blinded in WWII. My Dad told me that he used to pick Tom at the hospital in Chicago and went to a watering hole.
My Dad used to talk about Tom all the time.
Mr. Broderick a very nice and gentle person.
