I'm really sorry to find out about your loss. Your dad tried unsuccessfully to get me to play football for SMM back in the day. I will always remember how nice of a man he was.

I am deeply saddened for your loss. I met Mike while working in the 019th District. He was in one word "CLASS"! Always had a smile and a kind word for you, and treated everyone with sincere fondness. To Mike's Family,

I met Mike when I became a Detective and was lucky enough to get assigned to Area 6 Burglary. At that time new detectives were only assigned to the best detectives in the unit. As such, I was lucky enought to spend considerable time with and learn from Mike. He was truly an outstanding detective, police officer and person. His life touched and benefited countless people. His legacy lives on in those who were fortunate enought to learn and benefit from his knowledge, demeanor and professionalism, as well as those he helped. My deepset sympathy on your loss.

My sincere condolences to the family of Mike Herbert. I'm sorry I won't be able to make it to his wake. I've worked with Mike over many years while he was at Area 6/3 and found him to be very professional, kind, and helpful. He was always available to answer any questions you had, and yet he never seemed to feel it was beneath him to ask some of us younger guys what we thought about a problem he was having. Mike was one of the hardest working and knowledgeable detectives that I have known. He seemed to always have a positive attitude. After he retired from CPD, I would run into him at a Sox game or at 26th & Cal and he would always stop, say hello, and chat for awhile. He was a great guy for whom I've had a lot of respect. He will be missed.

I have started many messages and I am still unable to grasp the words that can describe how I can fully express my sympathies to the Herbert family. Mike and I have been friends for over forty years,from our days in the First District to and through the years at Area 6. Mike was a man that was truly loved and admired by those that knew him. He epitomized the term"class act".I do beleive the Good Lord and the White Sox won it for Mike. Rest in peace my friend.

My wife Emma and I are so very grateful to have known Mike. Just the mention of his name always brings warm feelings and a good story or two. He was always glad to see you, and it was real. You could feel it. He is one of those special people who will live on in the conversations and in the hearts of many. To Barbara and the family, our deepest sympathy.

Since moving to West Rogers Park in the mid 70's, Mike have been a beacon in the lives of my family members, for his volunteer work at Pottawottamie Park and will always be remembered for his kindness, compassion and generosity by us all.

Dear Family - Please accept my deepest condolences. Mike fought a valient battle for so long. What a testimony to a great guy! Mike and I were promoted to detective together in 1972 and our careers paralled in both Area 5 and Area 6.

We also spent many an hour with him at H.S. baseball games (our sons played) when he was scouting. He was always a strong, kind, and honest man. He will truly be missed.

I want to express my sincere condolences to the family of Michael Herbert. I met Mike during our careers on the Chicago Police Department. Mike was one of the finest most honorable persons I have ever met. He wiil always be in my prayers.

Words cannot express my sorrow to hear of Mike's passing. I had the good fortune to have known Mike when I was a youth officer for many years at Area 6/3. He was always a gentleman; had a good sense of humor; never a cross word. He was an excellent detective. There are few men the likes of Mike and I know that St. Peter said "job well done." I WENT TO ST IGNATIUS WITH MIKE. ALTHO I WENT TO ST GEORGE, WE WERE VERY FRIENDLY THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. WE HAD LUNCH LAST YEAR. HE WAS A VERY GOOD ATHLETE, A MAN OF CHARACTER AND SUBSTANCE. MY BEST TO THE FAMILY AND I WILL PRAY FOR HIM.

Simply put...Mr. Herbert, from the time he was my line coach at St. MM in 1977 through the last time I saw him a few weeks ago, was one of the most genuine, straightforward and nicest men I have ever been privledged to know!



His presence always reminded me of a quote I read long ago..."Big people are those who make us feel better when we are with them."



Mr. Herbert's was a "big" man...his good deeds and great character on Earth have him riding on angel's wings straight to heaven.

How proud I am to have been mike's friend. He never talked about his accomplishments nor his illness. I would see him on Sunday morning's at 10:30 he always patted me on the shoulder and would say "One more year and you might get it" He remains in my heart and a big part of my program. Thank you for sharing him with us.
