Sulima Rivera-Moya Obituary

Rivera-Moya, Sulima born in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico, on August 19, 1946 and arrived in Chicago in 1949, died peacefully at home on Sunday, May 16, 2004, at 4:20 p.m., surrounded by her loving husband, family and friends. Loving wife of Jose Oscar Moya, beloved mother of Luis Patricia Gonzalez, Kayla Gonzalez and Nikai Moya, loving sister of Jaime, Gato, Pedro Juan, Amanda, Maryann, Lisa, Joe, Luis Jr., and Luli, dear grandmother of Luci, Aja, Bianca, Monica, Michael, Alex, Alexis and Christian. Sulima known to her friends as "Su", was an artist and free spirit who loved the arts, food, family and friends...and on occasion a stranger or two. She was founder of the Association of the Latin Brotherhood of Artists (ALBA), the first Latino arts organization in the city of Chicago. She participated in various Latin American arts organizations promoting the arts in the city of Chicago. She received the Leader Luncheon Woman of the Year Award by the YWCA of Chicago in 1976. In addition, she worked for the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs under the Harold Washington Mayoral Administration. She was instrumental in the development of the first "Viva Chicago Festival" in Grant Park. Su was a person of deep convictions concerning family, friends and wherever injustices occurred. A celebrated cook and hostess whose goal in life was to make people feel welcomed and respected, she was a loyal friend always available whenever anyone needed help, support and love. Her love and peace are now dispersed throughout the universe for needy souls to share. Wherever there is any potential for beauty...you will find her spirit dwelling there. A memorial will be announced in the near future. Gestures of remembrance may be made in the form of a donation to: Conservations: The International Ovarian Cancer Connection, P.O. Box 7948, Amarillo, Texas, 79114-7948. Arrangements by: Cremation Society of Illinois, 773-281-5058.
