Stuart May Obituary

TRAVERSE CITY — On Thursday afternoon, Sept. 28, 2006, Stuart Warner "Stu" May, 70, of Traverse City, formerly of Ludington, went to be with his Lord and Savior. He was undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic/Rochester Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Born Nov. 5, 1935, in Midland, he was the son of Kendall B. and Ethel Addie (McIntosh) May.

Stuart was a committed believer and a true disciple of Jesus Christ. One of his greatest joys was studying and teaching the Bible and ministering to residents in nursing homes in the area.

Stu's career spanned 30 years as a high school teacher and football coach. Twenty-six of those years were at Ludington High School. He was proud of the fact that he found creative ways of incorporating God and country into his classrooms.

In 1988, he moved to Traverse City to marry Margaret "Peg" Woods Bell, who was the love of his life. Stu and Peg began an antique business that continued for 18 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.

Stuart was very patriotic. He loved to travel, and was happy when he was behind the wheel of his RV seeing the country he loved so much, and visiting family members. Stuart made a difference — those whose lives he touched will sorely miss him.

Stuart is survived by his loving and supportive family; wife, Peg; sons, David (Kelly) May, Scott (Olimpia) May; mother, Ethel A. May; step-sons, Robert (Monica) Bell, Tom (Pam) Bell; six grandchildren, Michaela, Ian, Miles, Reece, Brian and Emily; brother, Richard (Carolyn) May; many nieces, nephews; and many cherished in-laws.

Friends may call Wednesday, Oct. 4, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, where the May family will receive friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at Faith Reformed Church. Pastor Peter Semeyn and Peg's son, Pastor Robert Bell will officiate. Cremation will follow. Burial will take place later in Oakwood Cemetery.

In remembrance of Stuart, memorials may be directed to the Community Meals Program, c/o Faith Reformed Church. Envelopes may be obtained either at the funeral home or the church.

Peg: Pauline and I stood up with you and Stu when you were married and the four of us have been more to each other than friends, over the following years. Both Pauline and Stu were gifts from God and I think we tried to enjoy them to the fullest extent. They died within hours of each other and I know they are waiting for the day that we join them. They are both in the arms of our Lord so we can be comforted by that knowledge.

We will always remember Stu out in his yard decorating for Christmas and showing us his collection of antiques and such in their home.He always had a smile and loved when we would bring the children over on Halloween. He will deeply missed in the community and in our hearts. We are praying for his family.

"No outside threat, inside pulls apart." I still remember him teaching that to me in US History class way back in 1971. I also had him for gym in my sophmore year. Great teacher and his classes were always a lot of fun.

I will always think of Stu with that wonderful smile, his speaking from the pulpit with such conviction, and all those wonderful committee meetings we always managed to incorporate into a noon meal.
