Stephen O'Sullivan Obituary

O'Sullivan- Stephen L. O’Sullivan, former Wilton Postmaster born July 14, 1937 to Vesta Ethelwyn Vandeveer and John David O’Sullivan, died on August 20, 2006, from complications arising from a bone marrow disease. Though born in New York City, Mr. O’Sullivan lived most of his life in Fairfield County. He attended Ridgefield Elementary School, graduated in the first graduating class of Wilton Junior High School, and graduated from Westport’s Staples High School (as there was no high school in Wilton at that time) in 1955. Stephen’s work experience and education was eclectic, beginning at age 16 as “soda jerk” for Wilton’s Stivers Pharmacy. He attended the University of Colorado for one year and worked as a surveyor for a road being built leading into Yellowstone Park. Years later he returned and traveled that road. He served in Germany in the US Army as a Hawk mechanic. Upon his return to the U.S. , he worked while attending the University of Bridgeport. He enjoyed a full career in the US Postal Service-- beginning in Wilton in the 1960s as a janitor and returning to Wilton as postmaster in 1983. On his 55th birthday, he retired from the post office to enjoy wintering in Florida and summering in Rowayton. Mr. O’Sullivan had many interests. He sailed the Long Island Sound for many years in various boats , each dubbed “The Peg O” named for his beloved wife. His home building and renovations were a life long, never ending passion. He was involved in the community and served, in his youth, as a Wilton Fire Company volunteer. Committed to the natural environment, he served for a number of years as the president of the Farm Creek Association, and was instrumental in saving the Farm Creek Wetlands from being developed. He served as a Rotarian for twenty five years in many capacities, including president of Cos Cob Rotary Club. Mr. O’Sullivan is survived by his beloved wife Peggy McCulloch O’Sullivan; his sisters, Ethelwyn “Ethie” Lounsbury and her husband Donald Sr., Clarel O’Sullivan , Norleen Davies and her husband, George; and his brother, Vestan J. O’Sullivan and his wife Kathy; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Services for Mr. O’Sullivan will he held on Friday August 25th, 2006 at the United Church of Rowayton. There will be a visiting hour from 10:00-11:00 a.m. and Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nature Conservancy, 4245 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington,VA. 22203-1606. Dear Peg

We were surprised and saddened to have read of Steve's passing. We were driving down I-75 through Ellenton Monday (9/11) and I mentioned to Sandy that I had made up a Rotary meeting with Steve a year or so ago... had hope to do it this year. God Bless you. We'll all miss Steve. He was a great guy and a good Rotarian. Lots of Love to you.

Just heard about the passing of Steve. Both my Uncle Doc and I are sorry for your loss. Steve hired me as a carrier in Cos Cob back in 82. My Uncle was already working for him as a clerk. Steve was a great boss and mentor. I'm now the Postmaster in Terryville. My Uncle and I are deeply sadden.

Dear Peg- I just read about Steve's passing and am sorry I missed his service. I worked with Steve in Wilton for many years and he was a honest and forthright boss and wonderful mentor for me. I'm sure he is smiling down at us, sailing away with a breeze at his back.

My deepest sympathy,
