Stephen Harris Obituary

Harris, Stephen A

Stephen A. Harris, age 84, died January 28, 2024 in his home surrounded with love. He was born and raised in Chicago and graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in accounting. Steve earned his CPA license and was known for being an IRS agent who left the agency to start a successful tax practice - fighting the IRS! Steve was a protector at heart, a trait he learned from his father Mort who fought antisemitism in Chicago in the 1940's. Steve is predeceased by his father Mort and mother Eve, brother Lee Harris, and wife Marsha Harris. Steve is survived by his niece Pamela Harris Curtis, step-children Julie Schneider, Andy (Lora) Shulman, Lisa (Brian) Fox, and special friend Diane Sokolov.

Steve was creative in both business and personal life. He loved painting, wildlife photography, fishing, and having his Westie dogs by his side - even during client meetings. His tales of growing up in Chicago as his father's sidekick "Big Mort and Little Moe" will be cherished memories for all who knew him well.

Steve's long life is a testament to his fighter spirit as he battled Crohn's disease before much was known of how to treat it. Steve will be interred in a private service at Shalom Memorial Park in Chicago.

I met Steve in 1962 where we both started our career as Internal Revenue Agents in the downtown Chicago office of the Internal Revenue Service. We quickly became fast friends and hung around a lot playing sports and chasing girls. He introduced me to one girl that I eventually married and am still married to 57 years later. In 1978 my wife and I visited him in Columbus and met Marsha and her daughter.
I have all these great memories of Steve and I will never forget him and the time we had together.

Steve and I were grade school buddies. He was a terrific athlete and very fast
He beat me in a marbles tournament and went to DC to compete. I stayedhome
I spent many Saturdays at The Fat Man´s Corner. His dads liquor store and bar on 35th and Indiana
My wife and I also attended a wedding in the mid 60s
RIP

Steve and I grew up in the same building on Central avenue, in the Austin community of Chicago. We shared an interest in roller skating, and often played roller derby. Steve was faster than me, a better skater, and stronger. Of course, we played on the sidewalk. My mother always questioned my choice of playmates when I invariably came home from roller derby bleeding and with my clothes torn. But it was all worth it to be hanging out with the best athlete in Emmet school, my friend Steve. We miss you. The poker guys.

RIP Stephen , you were our accountant for over 40 years . We enjoyed our time each year when you were doing our taxes as we enjoyed our conversation about many topics , many fun laughs about many topics. We also enjoyed our time with your loving doggies, they were so sweet loving all of your clients. We not only got our taxes done but enjoyed our time to with you . Loved our invitations to your fun parties. Even though Bob passed in April 2023 I know he treasured your passion for looking out for your clients. One day we will all be together in Heaven. Prayers for all your family and special clients who will miss you and all the laughs and stories we al had the privilege to share with you

I´ve only known Stephen for about 10 years, through his daughter - Julie, who is my fiancée. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him over the years, and especially the stories and experiences of his life that he proudly shared. The power of family and relationships struck me as the central theme in Stephen´s love for life. He spoke of his brother Lee with much love and admiration, particularly his fishing trips. Like most family and friends that got to know Stephen, they wanted more of him. I was no exception and invited him on our own fishing trip to Dale Hollow Lake, one of his favorite. The two of us made that trip in April 2022. What a time, the fish were scarce but the laughs were plentiful. Picture attached - with his million dollar smile. I will miss my friend!

Stephen was a neighbor & good friend. We visited him & Marsha at their home in the Florida Keys. We enjoyed times together in Scottsdale, Az. Shared meals together, fished with him, watched football, & enjoyed his stories. What an amazing, wonderful, entertaining friend. I´ll miss him very much. He was a one of a kind.
