Dear Nancy, A voice from our past at Cook County Sch of Nsg. sends condolences on the loss of Shelly. It seems you had a great life with him, and I am so glad. I left Bill N. after about 12 years, finished medical school and residency in neurology and came to the faculty of the Univ of Texas Med School in Galveston where I have been for some 35 years. Remarried 20 years ago to a wonderful Yankee and lived a split life between NJ and Texas. Now we are both settled in Texas. He is 84. I am not retired but working full time -- at our age. Still have fond memories of those cold New Years parties at your home in the early days. Contact me at [email protected]. Would love to hear from you. Shelly's name just came to me tonight and I looked you up. You both have had a wonderful, long and happy life together that makes me very happy. Karyl Norcross Mehlman

Dear Nancy and family,
We hold dear the memories of summer parties and Christmas parties with the Thursday fellow docents and volunteers of Brookfield Zoo. There was also a fun bicycle ride on the Prairie Path from Elmhurst, as well as a fantastic trip with Nancy and Shel to China. We miss those days, and send our condolences.

Dear Nancy,
Dr. Slodki was an amazing person. In 1968 at Mt. Sinai he gave me my first job as a special procedures tech in the Heart Cath Lab. He was an amazing mentor. He gave me confidence and leadership. At that time I met my husband who went to Chicago Medical School and also did his internship at Mt. Sinai. He also was fond of him. I remember after the interns residents dinner dance we went out with him to a blues bar on the south side of Chicago. It was quite a memorable night. I got married that summer of 1970 and moved to Cincinnati where my husband began his residency in Psychiatry. It was because of him that I was able to get a great job in the heart cath lab of Good Samaritan Hospital and eventually became assistant supervisor. I will never ever forget that special person in my life who gave me an incredible foundation for my future.

Dear Nancy, My very first job in 1968 was for Dr. Slodki in the Heart Cath Lab at Mt. Sinai Hospital. He was an extraordinary person in my life. He was more than a mentor to me. He me the confidence and leadership to excel in my position in the cath lab. After marrying an intern at Mt. Sinai I then moved to Cincinnati and because of him I got a job at Good Samaritan and became assistant supervisor of the Special Procedure department. I have wonderful memories of him. Just before my husband finished his internship at Mt. Sinai there was a formal dinner dance that we attended and we went out with you both to a blues bar. It was quite an eventful night. You also had an engagement dinner for us that meant the world to us both. My deepest sympathy to you and your family. He will be greatly missed. Pat Roupas Gureasko

I was always very happy to learn that Dr. Sheldon Slodki was the assigned medical expert witness for the disability hearings that I was about to conduct. I knew that I was going to benefit greatly, as were the claimants and American taxpayers, from his workmanlike preparation, expansive medical knowledge, professional experience, unquestioned integrity and precise articulation of the implications of the medical evidence of record. No one knew the medical evidence of record better than Dr. Slodki, especially evidence pertaining to cardiology. All of us participants may have read the medical evidence and even studied it, but his medical education, professional training, vast practical experience, teaching background and high degree of acumen brought his understanding to levels that were much beyond our ken. We went to school when Dr. Slodki had the floor. And he was very happy, if not delighted, to share his medical insights for the enlightenment of the record and for informed medical fact finding. He would often say, You know that I just do this for the fun of it. There was absolutely no doubt that he did. He definitely enjoyed the intellectual challenge posed by the voluminous, repetitious and complicated medical record. But he also enjoyed making sure that the ultimate finder of fact at hearing was being afforded the right medical advice and guided to well supported, sustainable conclusions. He knew that these decisions affected peoples' lives and, at the same time, the limited public fisc. He wanted it to be right. In this role, over many years, Dr. Slodki, performed outstanding public service to the people of the United States and this was, in addition to and, for the most part, after years of medical practice and training of other doctors. His curriculum vitae alone set him apart, but he did not dwell on it. He wasn't that way. Two of the younger medical experts in our venue were in essence actually trained by Dr. Slodki. Of course, he was highly professional in his approach as a neutral, objective medical analyst, but on good and appropriate occasions he would be moved by compassion after the hearing to offer the poor claimant some needed, sound medical direction or advice.
He assuredly was not all work. He had good balance and was full of fun. He loved to tell his jokes at breaks and lighten things up a bit. He demonstrated some of his computer software and how he used it. He was on top of technology. He showed his vacation photos, shared his stories and life experiences, and it was most obvious that he was a dedicated father and family man. Talk about a role model! I greatly enjoyed our basketball talks, especially about the latest Bulls games and Bulls happenings and the NBA in general. My fellows and contemporaries in the disability process greatly admired and appreciated Dr. Slodki because we all knew what he brought to the table: knowledge, experience, articulation, dedication, sense of service, accomplishment, integrity and balance. We are so much better off to have known him and to have worked with him in carrying out the important public service mission with which we are privileged to be charged. To say that he will be missed is the grandest of understatements. God bless him and his wonderful family. My deepest condolences.

A professional gentle man with a wry sense of humor who taught me how to be an equal gentle man in asking his help during a Hearing before a Judge deciding if my client was able to work or not because of medical problems. A loss to the world, but not to our memories.
