Sherman, Saul "Sollie" 93, passed away peacefully at his home on October 10, 2010. Saul was born Sept 25, 1917 on the west side of Chicago. Saul was an All American football player and went on to play with the Bears. Saul was drafted to the Bears in 1939 to help implement the T-Formation which he learned in college under Clark Shaughnessy. Saul played two seasons before going to work for his family and played on the 1940 championship team along with Sid Luckman that beat the Redskins 73-0. Saul went on to achieve many successes in business and life after but always loved to tell stories of his days at QB and how his coach and mentor helped him out after he tore his meniscus in college. Saul would say that luck was his skill and that the greatest gift we can give is human compassion. Saul is survived by two children, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Saul was a kind, generous and remarkably skilled man. He will be missed dearly.

For many years Sol was an outstanding racquetball player at the Standard Club in Chicago-beating much younger men. His son John and I were contemporaries and attended a football camp in Minnesota one summer. Think he told me about being the first NFL player to throw a pass for an extra point in the 73-0 game. Wonderful memories.

Mr. Sherman and his wife, Devorah were fun and interesting to be around. Nothing prevented Devorah from voicing her opinion on anything and Saul would just watch. I loved his dry sense of humor. It's hard to believe they've been gone so long. Poor Shirley just passed away last year! She also was a grand lady.

My deepest, sincerely sympathy is with all of you during this time of sorrow. I shared many happy times with Saul and Devorah during the past 40 years of being neighbors. I truly enjoyed talking about his football years, as his spirits picked up instantly. They were a beautiful and entertaining couple and will be missed by all. Warmly, Pat Cohen

We remember your Dad as a great paddleball champion at the Standard Club, and a truly nice man who was always happy to say hello, and had a comforting manner and easy laugh. He was always nice to Nancy and me. I remember being at your home in Winnetka many times. We will miss your Dad--a true mensch. Nancy and Dan Pollack

Your father was a wonderful man and a good friend for many years before illness befell him. Although we have never met I want to extend my condolences. Many in the community, like me have fond memories of him. May the good Lord console you during this trying time.
