Tom, I was so surprised and saddened to read of your mother's death in the Dec. 3 article about her and Mary Heidcamp in the Sun Times. I only met her a couple of times, but she was a truly lovely person. I have moved to the south side with my daughter Lorien, and do not get up to Roger's Park often, but I have fond memories of you and your family from my years in Rogers Park. I am so very sorry for your loss. Kerri Ronne

Dear Anne Marie, Michael, Patrick, Thomas, John, and Seamus,
I will remember your mom, Pat, as a loving and holy woman. Back in the 60s and 70s we lived down the block from you on Glenwood. One morning as I was washing my hair to get ready for school, the water was unexpectedly shut off in our apartment. My mom (Miriam) called your mom and asked her if I could go and rinse my hair at your house. Of course she said yes, so I wrapped my hair up in a big towel and I was grateful to be able to use your sink and managed to get to school on time. I was so embarrassed by this, but your mom never forgot it and still laughed about it when we ran into her over the years. My mom and I also often joined your mom's rosary circle after the nine o'clock Mass at St. Gert's. The irony of her untimely death during this advent season when so many of the scripture readings are about the need to be always spiritually prepared did not escape me. No doubt your mom was ready to meet her Lord, but so many of us are not and we have much to learn from her. She died on Peace Road and in her own life exemplified the truth that the road to peace is prayer, sacrifice, and service. Be assured that she is with the Lord and her loved ones on the other side.
I ask the BVM to console you and your family,
June & Winnie Madden

I prayed the rosary and attended daily Mass with Pat. I sat right next to her in the pew every day--what a privilege! Pat was very dear to me, a great spiritual role model and teacher. She was the very model of piety, sweetness, humility, service, kindness.
She welcomed people with such gentleness. She always had an extra rosary in her purse for those who forgot theirs at home, or, a joy to her, for those who were new to the rosary. She taught our children at school the rosary, too.
She was a woman of such quiet service. The sacristry, the linens, the Legion of Mary, the rosary, bringing the Eucharist to the shut-ins, scores of funerals and wakes, giving rides to the sick--on and on it goes.
I will miss her hugs and kisses, and her sweet smile. I will miss praying with her very much. She was a saint.
