Sally Hobbs Obituary

Sally G. Hobbs was born December 18, 1961 to the late Alfred B. Hobbs Sr. and Lillie Mae Hobbs in Suffolk, Virginia. She departed from this life on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at her residence.


She was a 1980 graduate of West Philadelphia University City High School. Miss Hobbs received her 1985 Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education at Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia. She also obtained a Certificate of Biblical Studies from PCOCH School of Ministry in Suffolk, Virginia. Miss Hobbs was the 2007 salutatorian. She furthered her education at PCOCH School of Ministry and acquired the 2009 Associate Degree in Biblical Studies.


Due to illness, Miss Hobbs was employed for a short period of time. She worked for a Philadelphia Day-Care Center, Philadelphia Public Schools (substitute teacher) and retired from Southeastern Virginia Training Center in Chesapeake, Virginia.


After the death of her mother, she relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to live with an aunt, the late Mrs. Emma H. Pickett (father’s sister), until her death. She moved with late Mrs. Dorothy I. Worrell, Stephanie P. Worrell and Wallace Worrell III to finish high school. She was a member of Metropolitan A.M.E. Church and joined the children’s usher board and mass choir. Sally attended the yearly Sunday School Holy Convocation as a delegate and reported the lessons and activities to the class.


Miss Hobbs was a member of Rising Saint James Pentecostal Holiness Church under guidance of the late Bishop James E. Copeland; subsequently, continued her membership under leadership of the late Bishop D.L. Whitfield. She joined several auxiliaries; mass choir, usher board, children’s church, Vacation Bible School, RSJ Nursing Home Ministry and Human Resources.


Afterwards, Sally G. Hobbs became a member of Total Transformation House of Praise under the leadership of the late D.L. Whitfield and joined the children’s church and Hospitality Ministry Greeters.


Miss Hobbs’ volunteer services: tutored school-aged children for 30 years, Suffolk Public Schools, Lake Kennedy Civic League, Alpha Kappa Alpha Summer School Program and wrote plays and skits for the church.


She leaves to cherish her memory two brothers, Bryant K. Hobbs and Alfred B. Hobbs Jr.; cousins, Paulette H. Barnes, Calvin Askew, Jeanette Askew, Lorraine Mackey (Quint), Lonnie Askew (Helen); two oldest cousins, Wilma Twine and Dorothy Gatling; special nephews and nieces/cousins, Kenyell Worrell, Alonta Askew, Tyran Askew (Ericka), Ashley Struthers, Aleivy Robinson Jr., Harmony Billups and Damien Askew; distant cousin, Mary Crutcher; Askew Family, Hawk Family, Goodman Family, Riddick Family; a host of other relatives and friends.
