Ruth Horwich Obituary

Horwich, Ruth Ruth Horwich died peacefully in her home on July 21st. She was 94 years old, a leap year baby, but in spirit she was only 23 1/2 years old! Ruth and her late husband Leonard began collecting art in the late 50s, and were drawn to artists such as Alexander Calder, Dubuffet, Lam, the Chicago Imagists and European Surrealists. Together they created a diverse collection motivated by what they liked, often buying work by unknown artists. After Leonard's death in 1983, Ruth continued to enthusiastically support young artists and to buy folk art, outsider art and local contemporary art along with more well-known artists. Ruth donated their collection of Calder mobiles and stabiles to the Museum of Contemporary Art, of which she and Leonard were founding members. She was also chair of the Hyde Park Art Center for 40 years and a board member of Poetry Magazine and the Art Institute of Chicago. Ruth and Leonard were instrumental in donating the large standing outdoor sculpture by Jean Dubuffet in the plaza of the State of Illinois building and donated other works of art to the Art Institute, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Smart Museum. She is survived by her four children, Barbara Horwich Lloyd, Jonathan Horwich, Ann Snider and Bill Horwich; by three grandchildren, Pamela Lloyd, Emily Lloyd Shaw and Roanne Horwich; and by four great-grandchildren. She generously opened her home to artists and museum groups and enjoyed sharing her love of art with everyone. As her oldest great grandson, Jasper, said, when asked what he loved about his grandmother, he said that her house was like a museum but you could touch everything! A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 20th, at 3:00 p.m. at KAM Isaiah Israel Congregation. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hyde Park Art Center or to the Museum of Contemporary Art.

I had the good fortune to meet Mrs. Horwich in September 1992. She opened her home to me and my friend Achim d'Avis, who was Ed Paschke's main collector in Europe. I seem to remember that we were introduced by another collector from Chicago, Mr. Bergmann.
Ruth's kindness and availability were as incredible and magnificent as her collection.
This all-too-brief visit to her home remains etched in my heart.
One word:

Thank you.

A Mentor, a Patroness Supreme, a Fashion Icon in her own right. She was always there, always present always supportive as I struggled with my life and my art. She is missed and will be for a long time. We shared a non-pareilled love of art and culture that was her calling. Her spirit truly was only 23-1/2 years old--forever young, forever vibrant and forever Ruth! I miss you now and thank you for being in my life!!My love forever! Jan

i still have fond memories of my first visit to the extraordinary home of both Leonard and Ruth Horwich home on S. Woodlawn. It was indeed an impressive house museum from exterior to an array of masterpieces within in every respect. . They were so generous in welcoming me and encouraged to join them at openings at the Hyde Park Art Center then located in the 5200 block of S. Blackstone and the memories
still linge as I rejoice in the legacy of their kindness.

Over the years, countless times I would see Ruth Horwich at various cultural events and we would always have time for a little visit. My late Mom and I visited her in her amazing home which she opened for art lovers. I met some wonderful people through Ruth. My heart goes out to her family. Please accept my condolences.

I remember as a child romping around the great Horwich house with Bill(y), playing among all the things I would later recognize as art but thinking at the time how they caught my attention as not only interesting but intimate to our play world. That access was a very special gift Ruth and Len gave to us. I remember them both with cherished memories which I send, along with my condolences at this time of mourning, to Barbara, Jonathan, Ann, Bill, and their children.

We had the pleasure of knowing Ruth through the Museum of Contemporary Art. She was smart, honest, outspoken, and had a fabulously adventuresome sense of style. In addition to all the fabulous art, there were all those lovely vintage handbags, too. She will be missed by so many.
