Rosemary Donahue Obituary

Donahue, Rosemary Watkins Died May 15, 2012, aged 82, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Rosemary never did give up easily. Born November 19, 1929 in Hyde Park, she defied expectations and pressures of the time to pursue a degree in journalism at the University of Illinois, graduating in 1952. She met her beloved husband John at the University of Illinois, marrying in 1952, and raising five children as well as her niece Laurel Perry. She was in motion her entire life, sometimes making it difficult even for her children to keep up with her. When her youngest child was in high school in the mid-1970s, she was ready to return to her journalism roots. She was hired on the spot by the Homewood-Flossmoor Star to write a column on girls sports, becoming the first female sports writer in the Chicago area. She showed grit and determination, not allowing "helpful advice" from male colleagues to keep her from doing the job her way. Through her column she forced an area high school to equalize its treatment of female athletes as well as weighing in on Illinois High School Association controversies. She was also a businesswoman. She was the Secretary of the Board of Directors of Pet Life Foods, Inc., a niche dog food company, and played an active role in growing the company. Most of all she was the center of the family, providing support, keeping everyone connected, and telling great stories. She enriched lives around her, made everyone around her feel that they were valued, and drawing people to her in the process. She traveled around the world, was an avid golfer and birder, was interested in the arts, and never lost her love of learning, attending lectures on Egypt the week before being admitted to hospital. She belonged to and participated in many organizations including an organization to promote fair housing founded in the 60s in the south suburbs, was an election judge, belonged to Flossmoor Country Club, the Art Associates of the Art Institute of Chicago and others. She is survived by her beloved husband of almost 60 years; daughters, Joan Donahue (SCPO, USN (ret)) and Kathleen (Liam) McNally; sons, John (Mary Edna), Michael (Leslie) and Kevin (Peggy) and 10 grandchildren, Sara (Mark) Pecak and Brian Wheeler; Mary Frances (Sonya Stahl), Kathryn, John Matthew, Thomas, Kiernan, and James Folz Donahue, and Elizabeth and Thomas Donahue; and two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Elizabeth Pecak and many nieces and nephews who were dear to her. Also survived by her brother, William (Alexandra) Watkins and her niece, Miwa and great-nephew, William. Resting at the Tews Funeral Home,18230 Dixie Hwy. Homewood, IL 60430 Thursday from 3 to 9 pm. Funeral Friday 9:15 am to Infant Jesus of Prague Church, Flossmoor Road and Leavitt Ave., Flossmoor. Mass 10:00 am. Interment Calvary Cemetery, Steger, IL. www.tewsfuneralhomes.com or 708-798-5300.

I want to convey my sincere condolences and sympathy to all the Donahue family. It was such a great joy working for her at Pet Life Foods. One of my fondest memories of Rosemary is when she gave me such a hug when we stood at the end of a newly placed biscuit production line and watched the operation for its first production.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

It is with great sadness that I hear of the passing of Rosemary Donahue. I was one of those female athletes in the late 70's early 80's who benefitted from the many articles written by her. I am a Hillcrest grad who still remembers her coming to my house in 1981 to do an article about me for "Player of the Year." We would get the paper every day to see what Rosemary Donahue would write -- and she made us realize that as women we could do and accomplish any thing we put our minds to. What a wonderful woman and role model!
Thank you Rosemary Donahue -- you made my high school years more complete and I appreciate all you did for girls in sports.
