Rose Ching-Boye Wong

Rose Wong Obituary

Wong, Rose Ching-Boye Age 88, Minneapolis. Although the family home was in Canton, China, Rose Wong was born in Manila, the Philippines, where her father operated a biscuit factory. Her mother was a teacher. She also had a younger brother, Tony. After her standard education in China, she studied nursing, and later practiced in Hong Kong during the years of World War II. After her marriage to Wen Wong, a Toisanese businessman who owned the Kin Chu Café in Minneapolis, MN, Mrs. Wong accompanied her husband to the United States in 1948. The Wongs had one son and two daughters, in addition to the ten children from Wen Wong's first marriage. When Wen Wong closed his restaurant and turned to the grocery and restaurant supply trade, Mrs. Wong joined him in his new business, the Kwong-Tung Noodle Company. Her fluency in Cantonese was a valuable asset to the business. After her husband's death in 1971, Mrs. Wong stayed on to manage the business for its new owner. After her retirement, Mrs. Wong continued her lifelong interest in gardening, and participated in the Chinese Senior Citizens Society. Rose Ching-Boye Wong died on June 22, 2006. Her children, David Wong (Laura Weisberg) of Durham, NC, Doris Wong (Jeffrey Winter) of Minneapolis, MN, and Julia Wong (James Moy) of Madison, WI survive her. Stepchildren and their spouses who survive her are Lillian Wong, San Francisco, CA; Jane and Bill Lewis, Renton, WA; Robert Wong, Carlsbad, CA; Dorothy and Harding Pan, Brookfield, WI; Betty and Allen Hum, Minnetonka, MN; and Edward and Rosemarie Wong, Glendale, CA. In addition, twenty-eight grandchildren, twenty-seven great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandson survive her. Her family especially thanks the staffs of Walker Elder Suites and Hospice of the Lakes for their exceptional care. Private interment; visitation will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Memorials are preferred to the Chinese Senior Citizens Society or the Alzheimer's Association.

Edward & Rosemarie Wong

Dear David, Doris & Julia,

We wish we could be with you and your families at the private interment and memorial service for Rose to pay our respects. Regrettably, Ed's treatment schedule does not permit us to be with you.

Losing one's mother is a very difficult life-event. But she had lived a long life and with her recent medical problems stemming from the broken hip, this was her time.

As you know, I have delved into our family history, and the research that I have done increases my admiration for the Chinese who emigrated to America, particularly for the Chinese women, who left their families, culture and support groups behind in search of a better life but did not have the job or business to focus on while they adapted to life in America, where people were often less than welcoming, and at times, openly hostile, to the Chinese. Both Rose and Dad had talked about going back to China, so both viewed their stay in America as a sojourn. However, after Mao Tse-Tung drove Chiang Kai-Shek and his government to Taiwan in 1949, their dream of returning to China was put on hold.

Rose, I am sure, was proud of her children and your accomplishments, and rightfully so.

She was always very kind to me, Rosemarie and my children. Whenever we visited them at the Kwong Tung Noodle Co. store, she always gave John and Lisa some sort of gift or token to take home.

We send our sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathies to you at this time of your loss.
