Rose Levin Obituary

Levin, Rose A. Rose Levin died peacefully in Seattle, Washington, on March 31, 2015. She was 101 years old. Rose was born in Chicago on February 11, 1914, to Dora Greenman and Salvatore Abbate. She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel K. Levin; and by her brothers, Adolph and Joseph Abbate. She is survived by her sons, Ronald (Peggy) and Michael (Ilana), of Seattle. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Gabriel, Meirav, Elisheva, and Hefzibah, of Seattle; Sara, of San Francisco; Chamutal, of Jerusalem; Achinoam and Inbal, of New York; Avishag (Chaim) and Sholam, of Pittsburgh; and Shmuel, of Kinshasa; and by her great-grandson, Lucas, of Seattle. Rose graduated from Tully High School and worked, initially, at I. S. Berlin and later, at Marshall Fields. She and Sam enjoyed raising their two sons in East Rogers Park in a home that was often filled with friends and family. After Sam's death in 1973, Rose moved to Gulfport, Florida, where she lived by the water and loved to take daily walks and enjoy the fresh air. She lived independently until she was 95, swimming, playing mahjong, making new friends, and volunteering at Menorah Manor an assisted living facility in nearby Saint Petersburg. She was a loyal, passionate, and independent, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt, and friend to many. She loved her independence. Her shopping trips in Seattle were legendary; she took the bus downtown on her own well into her 90s. She also had a lifelong heartfelt fondness for Chicago. At 92, returning to Chicago for a visit, she walked along the beach from North Avenue (the beach of her and her brother's youth) to Oak Street and back, loving every moment of it and fully realizing how wonderful life can be.
