I think about Rod very much because he was such a close friend. I thought about him and talked about him more this year due to the current event in Chicago. On 8/28/68 I turned 21 and Rod wanted to take me downtown Chicago to celebrate my 21st birthday. We drove down and we were on Wabash behind the Hilton Hotel when the Democratic convention riot broke out and we were caught in it for hours with protesters running and jumping on my car. It was scary and a mess. At the end laughed and wished me a happy 21st birthday and we went home. Unfortunately Rod passed on my birthday and I think about him but this year we had the Democratic convention and lots of memories arose. I miss him greatly. Russ Killion

Looking at his picture breaks my heart because I miss him very much. It’s difficult to imagine that he’s been gone 10 years. There are numerous times every year where I think about doing something with him if he hadn’t passed away. I always wanted him to go to Cubs games with me but he wouldn’t and he wanted me to go to White Sox games and I wouldn’t. Our whole life together we were like brothers. Russ Killion

Hi, Sweetheart, Nora told me that I did see you before you passed, but with all the activity that was going on, I must have forgotten. I love you and I´m looking forward to us meeting again when my memory is clearer!! Love you and miss you!! !!

I knew I would miss Rod when he passed away but I really didn’t know or understand how much I would miss him. We knew each other for so long and did so many fun and goofy things together, it’s difficult to go places around Chicago without seeing something that brings back memories of him. He passed away on my birthday, and at my age I don’t celebrate my birthday much, but it’s difficult enjoying anything I do on that day knowing that we all lost a great friend. Russ Killion

I'm just reading this for the first time. I too was a classmate at Palmer grade school and was in the Cub Scouts with Rod. I also remember taking music lessons with Rod as he played the trumpet. We had great times together and wish we'd have been in contact through the years.
With fond memories- tom Apostolos

Words cannot express how very sorry we are that Rod's hand was called so soon. They say we are made of the people who touch our lives, and Rod will forever be a part of us. We know he would not like this book filled only with condolences, so we will deal a few fond treasures - like his delivery of homemade cookies when we moved in, how he called our dog the name he chose, his instruction on how to bury a parked car in snow, that Glug, and the way he sang "school days." We will always smile when we think of Rod! He is out of retirement with a new job as guardian angel - does that mean the Cubs will never win the World Series? This is not goodbye, just a gap in time until we meet again.
