Robert Dunlap Obituary

Robert Edgar Dunlap, a devoted husband, loving father, proud veteran, and successful entrepreneur, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family. Born in Detroit, Michigan, to Lucille Hull Dunlap and William Edward Dunlap, Robert lived a life full of purpose, resilience, and unwavering dedication to his loved ones and community.

At the heart of Robert’s life was his beloved wife, Paulette Dunlap, his rock and constant companion. Their love was a source of strength and joy.

Robert served honorably in the United States Army from 1958 to 1964, a time that shaped his steadfast character and commitment to service. He continued his passion for helping others with a highly accomplished nursing career. Following his graduation from Detroit Practical Nursing Center in 1967, Robert’s career spanned years of service having worked at Detroit General Hospital; many private nursing facilities as a Staff and Charge Nurse; General Motors as an Industrial Nursing professional; and the Veteran Affairs Hospital in Chillicothe, where he provided care to fellow veterans.

A natural leader and mentor, Robert spent time as a “Big Brother” and was always willing to lend his sage wisdom to those he cared for. He was a successful businessman, owning and operating rental properties, a laundromat, and licensed alcohol retail stores—an irony he embraced with pride, having celebrated nearly 49 years of sobriety at the time of his passing. Though he embraced the challenge of taking on different career roles, Robert was enthusiastic about his retirement in the fall of 2001.

Above all, Robert cherished his family. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Paulette Dunlap; his beloved children, Michelle Dunlap, Rochelle (Alex) Mosley, and Cynthia Spivey (Sherwin Sr., deceased); his grandchildren, Glenn “PJ” (Kasie) Eason, Robert Dunlap (Danielle Merritt), Devonna (Nicholas) Dionne, Sherwin Spivey Jr., Shanice Spivey, and Denard Dunlap; and his great-grandchildren, Norman Eason, Alanna Eason, Donzell Merritt, Pierson Dionne, and Devlyn Dunlap. He also held a special place in his heart for Ava and Reed Barcus, whom he adored taking on adventures. He was predeceased by his best friend of over 40 years, Gary Jones. His memory will be cherished by a host of other family members and close friends.

A private ceremony remembering Robert will be held in the presence of close family with Pastor Robert Davidson, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Hospice of Central Ohio at www.ohioshospice.org/give.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all those who provided care during this time, with special thanks to his nurses, Julie and Erin, and caregiver Kristina

He was always a nice guy whenever I came to visit my grandparents, always keeping them company and keeping a watchful eye on them to assist. I know my family will miss him greatly.
