Richard Maher Obituary

Maher, Dr. Richard "Dick" J. PhD 67, passed away in the comfort and presence of family at Evanston North Shore Hospice on September 14, 2010 after a brief but heroic battle with cancer. Dr. Maher was a husband to his wife Karen of 43 years; father to his sons, Daniel (Karen) and Patrick; grandfather to two wonderful grandchildren, Ryan and Senna. In his life, Richard was known as trusted husband, father, uncle, grandfather, educator, mentor and friend. He was looked upon as the 'Godfather' of his Wilmette neighborhood as being known as a level headed person who could settle any dispute or listen to neighbors who just needed to vent. Richard was the valedictorian of Leo High School class of 1961, graduated from Notre Dame in 1965 and received his Doctorate from Northwestern University in 1971. Dr. Maher was an accomplished academic author of several textbooks, peer reviewer of several projects and editor. He was a Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Loyola University Chicago for over 40 years and was preparing to retire to spend his golden years with his darling Karen. As his first days of courtship to his last days of life were, all about making sure his darling Karen would be looked after and taken care of. Visitation will be Friday, September 17th, 3 to 9 p.m. at Wm. H. Scott Funeral Home, 1100 Greenleaf Ave., Wilmette. A Memorial Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church in Wilmette will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Francis Xavier Parish, 524 9th St., Wilmette, IL 60091 would be appreciated. Share a tribute at www.mem.com. Info 847-251-8200.

It is ironic dad that I am the 22 entry to your guest book. Considering all the Basketball teams you coached and that was always my number. Everyone tells me about the beautiful obit I wrote about you. All I can say back is that is just a short note about how great of a person you are. I really intend to make do everything I told you I would as you passed away holding my hand, mom is hurting as she will until she gets to see her darling Richard again. I really can not thank you for everything you have done for me and know that I am forever greatful if there were more people like you this world would be a much better place.. Just know I will live the rest of my life making you proud and I will never forget you.

I was saddened to hear that the Loyola math department lost another of their professors who had made it such a strong place for students to learn. Please accept my condolences.

I was in Leo Grammer School with Richard and in Leo HS. My condolences to his family. I remember how he and a fellow classmate Gintris Recalitis always won all the spelling B's is Sister Ellen Angelas classes (8th
Grade). All my recollections are fond and I now realize how mortal we all are. God Bless.

I'm going to miss Dick not only as a colleague but also as a friend. For many years we would be the first to arrive in the department and often had time to talk before the day started. It would only take several minutes before we were both laughing, usually at the latest joke Dick had heard. It was always such a wonderful way to start the day.

I am so saddened by Dick's passing. I will remember him as always cheerful, always helpful, and always caring. He truly had a heart for the students he taught and his colleagues in the math department. I pray Karen, Pat, and Dan that God will give you comfort and strength in the days to come.

I've known Dick for close to 40 years, ever since he began at Loyola. A great colleague, good friend to many who, like me, were colleagues from other departments. Kind, thoughtful, bright, excellent teacher--and very, very funny. I will miss him very much, and I salute him.

Professor Maher taught me statistics my freshmen year of college. He was always very friendly and often made jokes in a class that could be overwhelming. I appreciated the time he spent emailing us all the notes and helpful things in the class. He will be missed by me as I remember him with a huge heart.

I remember Dick from our days together at Leo High School. We were friends but not really close friends and after graduation we went our separate ways. But we used to get together sometimes and have fun. Dick had an unusual combination of gifts in that he was very intelligent and was very easy to like. My sympathy to his family

Pat, my condolences to you and the rest of the family in such time of sorrow. You know that through you, members of the family and his legacy your father will never die. Browsing the family album also showed me how much of a spitting image of your father that you are when he was a younger man. Again my condolences..." Emmert Gauthier & wife Rutza Gauthier

I may not have known him well, but I knew what a great guy he was. Dr. Maher taught me statistics last year and he was always kind and friendly. Dr. Maher was very helpful and friendly each and every class. I don't like statistics, but he truly made the class worthwhile. I'm glad to have had him while I had the chance. I am very sad to hear that he is gone. My condolences go out to his family and loved ones...

I am very saddened to hear these sad news. Dr. Maher was one of those teachers who make an impact in a student's life. He could brighten your day within seconds of the start of class. I feel honored that my transcript has my name. May he rest in peace.

Dr. Maher was my statistics professor two years ago. I remember him as a man that loved to teach and who had the ability to make something complex simple. His stories and jokes made class not only interesting but comfortable and he was always there for his students. All I have are good memories of this great man. My prayers are with his family and friends and I hope that he is at peace and knows he will truly be missed. God Bless.

As a freshman I had the opportunity to take Statistics with Dr. Maher. It was a required course for my major and I remember being extremely nervous, because I had never been strong in math. I was relieved to find that Dr. Maher was so understanding and helpful. He took the time to meet with me after class and clarify the things I didn't understand. This was the first and only time in my life that I had been successful in a math class and I know it was a result of Dr. Maher patience and care. One sweet thing I remember about him was the way he returned each of the three exams we took that semester; the first was returned alphabetically, the second reverse alphabetically, the third group of tests was scattered in the air by his grandchildren and then returned to us in the random order that they fell.

Professor Maher was such a kind and light-hearted man. He was an excellent teacher, who would help his students in any way he could. By simply being in his class, hearing stories about his family and wife, I saw just how much he loved the life he had, even despite all those sarcastic jokes of his! My prayers are with his family and loved ones. God Bless.

I remember Dr. Maher as a kind and caring professor. Whenever he came into the Dean's Office, he was always smiling and gracious to staff members. May God grant comfort and peace to beloved family and friends.

He was a very smart man. He was always there when you needed help with homework. He taught statistics with a good sense of humor. It was nice to have had him as a teacher.
