Dr Buckingham saved my life when I was 3 after another doctor mistreated a ruptured cyst for over a year. He looked in my ear, smelled it and scheduled the first of two radical mastoidectomy surgeries on my left ear. Every six months my father and I traveled to see the man who got tired of watching it take two nurses and my dad to hold me down from kicking and screaming while he tried to vacuum out my ears. Dr Buckingham let me calm down, handed me the ear vac and feel the suction on my arm and back of my hand. I never fought them again (squirmed a lot). I have thought about him often and owe him so much for my life.

Dr. Buckingham changed my life with surgery in 1965. Not a week goes by that I haven't thought of him in the past 53 years. While I lived in many places around the country, it was always a joy to schedule an appointment when I would return to Chicago to visit family.

My deepest sympathy to Dr Buckingham's Family. My name is Dr. Sylvia Moscoso and Dr. Buckingham did a wonderful thing in the 1960s that I want to share. He helped bring the most talented graduating Medical Students from impoverished Cochabamba Bolivia to Chicago so they could do their Residencies in Chicago and as a result they also became U.S. Citizens. My father was among those Medical Students that Dr. Buckingham helped bring to Chicago. My father became a successful General Surgeon, eventually holding positions as Chairman of Surgery, Medical Staff President and serving on the Medical Disciplinary Board in Springfield under Governor Jim Edgar. My father also went on to have a family, of which I am the oldest and i too became a Physician in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Chicago. All of this is thanks to Dr Buckingham and to his vision and persistence. Myself and my family would most likely not be in this wonderful USA if it was not for him. Thank you Dr. Buckingham and rest in peace. God Bless.

Dr. Buckingham restored my hearing after four others were unsuccessful. I asked why he could? He replied that he operated on cats' inner ear mechanisms for years, perfecting several stapedectomy techniques not know to others. He could tie a knot in an eyelash with fingers of one hand. Teaching an intern during my surgery under "local anesthetic" laced between comments on technique, Dr. Buckingham spoke of family vacations, happy times. I was completely relaxed! Thanks to him, I could hear for more than forty more years. He did God's work all his life and inspired all who knew and loved him.

All of us who valued Dick as a colleague also valued him more as a friend. What a family. Bill was one of my profs 40+ years ago and Dick my consultant for 3 decades. To paraphrase Orwell, all people are irreplaceable, but some are more irreplaceable than others. God speed, Richard, and thank you for your wisdom, diligence, and kindness.

I remember my uncle Richard as a good and loving man. When I was a child, we would visit and see our cousins... what great fun! Uncle Dick would greet us in his big-voiced, jovial way. He would always find a way to encourage each of us kids. Once I had grown, I became more aware of the great service he gave to others, as a physician, a volunteer and a teacher. My ENT physician at St. Louis University had been one of his residents. How many lives benefited from his sharing of his gifts! We will miss Uncle Richard and send our sincere condolences to all of the family. With his passing, now that my Dad, Bob and our Uncle Bill are gone, so passes a generation of Buckinghams. We will never replace them but we will carry on as they taught us to do. Peace and Love, Frank
