Reggi and I go back to the days of Hebrew school where "Malcah" really was a queen. Years later my family had the privilege of becoming the Marder's next door neighbors. I grieve with you and pray that you can find strength in one another. Yehe zicra baruch, may Reggi's memory be blessed.

I'm so sorry to hear of this loss. I remember walking to school with Reggi about 40 years ago. What a warm and memorable person, whom I can still picture with affection from such a time distance.

"We never know the timber of a person's soul until something cuts it deeply and brings the grain out strong." Just how deeply Reggie's life cut into our grain remains to be seen as we learn to live on without her. How ironic it is that my last conversation with Reggie just a few days before her death centered around making changes in our lives. Little did either of us know how sudden and drastic those changes were about to become. We at MATEC-WI pledge to continue the good work she fostered during her life journey.

Joe:

Reggi's compassion for and ability to connect to so many is evident by the entries in this book. That her spirit shined so, can only make your loss and your children's loss that much greater. My condolences to your entire family.

Dear Marder and Eppstein families,

My deepest sympathies to you all in this painful time. I've only run into Reggi half a dozen times since highschool, yet each time I was struck by her warmth and sincerity. My fondest memory of her was during "ballroom dancing" at Elm Place Jr. High, where she was the best boogaloo (sp?) dancer I ever saw. Dance with the stars now, dearest Reggi.

Sarah Senseman

August 15, 2005

I had the privilege of working with Reggi these past few years on a grant program with MATEC. During that time, I was impressed with her warmth, love of family, beautiful nature, and dedication to working to improve the lives of people affected by HIV. She will be greatly missed. Your family is in my thoughts each day.

I was so sorry to hear about Reggi's passing. I have such wonderful memories of cream cheese and olive sandwiches in Reggi's kitchen. Junior high school memories are filled with Reggi and the large group of friends who congregated and moved around fluidly. While we have all moved on, my heart is filled with wonderful memories. I am saddened by the loss. Reggi was a wonderful woman. My prayers go out to the Marder and Eppstein family.

Dear Marder and Eppstein Families,

Although the last time I had seen Reggi was 10 years ago at our mutual dear friend's 40th b-day party, I had known her since our HPHS days and always remember her for her bright smile, ability to listen intently and be truly engaged in conversations, making one feel like their lives were truly of interest to her. So, even though our contacts were few and far between over the years, I know I will always miss her and appreciate that warm and giving spirit. I hope your families are comforted in the huge outpouring of tributes that are clearly coming straight from the deepest reaches of the heart. Peace be with you during this difficult time.

Reggi's was one of the kindest, friendliest and most welcoming faces I remember from my first days at JRC. As the sad news spread Monday and Tuesday, I was awed to see how many lives she touched, how many disparate people were grieving the loss of this warm, wonderful woman. May this outpouring of love and memories bring comfort to the family.

Reggi was a wonderful friend and colleague. I picked up the phone and called or emailed her hundreds of times in the 8 years we worked together at MATEC, almost always starting out my message with "Hey Reg! What do you think of...?" I will miss her greatly. My heart goes out to her family, her friends, and all my other colleagues at Chicago MATEC and around the country who feel her loss so keenly.

Dearest Ilana and family,

I was saddened when I heard of the loss of your dear, sweet Mama. Everyone who came into her realm of love, joy, and giving will miss her. I will always remember how you and your Mama graciously invited our whole kindergarten class to your home and we enjoyed your sukkot and your joy in serving us all the sweet things to eat. I sat there in that quiet, beautiful spot your family created and thought how fun it must be to sleep and eat here with your loving family for eight days. Then later your Mama invited us again and taught the whole class how to weave and then she came to class to help the children finish the weaving. I still have the beautiful weaving the class did on my dining table. When Mr. Riley and I came home from the service yesterday I took him to the weaving and shared a bit more about my love of Reggi. I told him about eating lunches with you and your Mama during the summer, about your Mama watching for you outside the school door all through your years, about your family sharing Shabbat with the class, about her love and concern for all your family and friends in Israel, about her pride and joy in you. She has given you a legacy of helping others, of love, of zest for life, of caring for the most humble of ones, of loving God, of loving family beyond all things. What a privilege I have had to be included in her vast circle of friends. I love you, Ilana. Mrs. Riley

August 9, 2005

Dear Joe,Eitan,Sarah & Ilana,

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. When I think of your mom/Reggi, I will remember someone with a big heart. A heart that chose to invite a whole classroom of kindergartners into her home one day to show them how to weave, but more importantly, making each child feel they had a sense of worth and were special. I'll remember someone who would always walk in our classroom with a big smile & hug & kiss for Sarah, and then always enough time after to share that smile and warmth with the rest of the class. Her giving and selfless nature, spirit and her devotion to helping others through her work and in her daily life, was truly a gift from God.

Peace be with you always ~

love,

Joe (mr.wise)

To Joe, Eitan, Sarah and Elana--

I was very priveleged to get to know Reggi (and you all) when I tutored Sarah five years ago, prior to her Bat Mitzvah. Reggi was a very special person, full of sweetness, gentle caring and a passion for justice in the world. I know the heaviness of your grief at this time must be overwhelming. Please know that countless people will remember Reggi as the beautiful, shining woman she was, always reaching for new challenges and always challenging others to work for justice. I truly believe that God is the first to weep when such a dear one passes from our existence. Zichronah l'vrachah. And please know that YOUR goodness and deeds are a tribute to Reggi's life as well. Shalom, Kate Kinser
