Phyllis Igoe Obituary

Igoe, Phyllis Levell 91, died November 26, 2018 in her home in Elmhurst. Born August 3, 1927 to Shirley and Lavinia Levell in Chicago, she had many fond memories of playing with her siblings and neighborhood children while growing up and enjoyed a close friendship with her younger sister, Ginna, for her entire life. She married William Igoe in July 1946. Together they worked hard to purchase their house in Elmhurst where she devoted her life to making a beautiful and welcoming home for all. Family was very important to Phyllis. She was a wonderful wife and was especially proud of her four sons; she wanted to be known as a "maker of men." Her kindness and generosity touched everyone; her door (and fridge) was always open to her sons' friends. She especially enjoyed gathering her children and grandchildren at the holidays and she played an active role in her grandchildren's lives as both babysitter and friend. She loved camping and planned extensive summer trips in the American West with her young family. She was proud of her Cornish heritage and was a member of the Cornish American Heritage Society. In their retirement, she and Bill traveled to England several times where she was able to pursue her interest in genealogy. A gifted seamstress and fiber artist, she began sewing as a teenager and she shared her skills with the community by sewing jerseys for the York High School hockey team, banners for various nonprofits, making and altering wedding and bridesmaid dresses, as well as sewing clothing for herself, children, grandchildren, and their dolls. She enjoyed sharing her love of ceramics and ice skating and taught skating at the Elmhurst YMCA. She will be sorely missed by her husband of 72 years, Bill; her sons, William (Janis), Peter (Mary), Matthew (Linda), and Brian (Anna); eight grandchildren; brother, James; sister, Virginia "Ginna"; and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Shirley, John "Sonny," and Roberta "Bobbie." Visitation at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Rd., Elmhurst from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 30, 2018. Prayers 8:45 a.m. Saturday, December 1, 2018 at the funeral home, going to Visitation Church.
