Philip Carlson Obituary

Carlson, Philip age 79. Beloved husband of Sandra (nee Peck) Carlson of Grayslake, IL, loving father of Kimberly (Jeffrey) Schnoor of Ingelside, Glenn Carlson (Michael Childers) of Cambridge, WI, Craig (Cindy) Carlson of Grayslake, Gayle Mondie of Ingleside, Kurt (Samantha) Carlson of Grayslake, step-father of Andrew, Douglas and John Green, devoted grandfather of Eric Schnoor, Jennie (Scott) Wold, Josh Mondie, Blair and Brooke Carlson, Emily and Drew Carlson, and Carter Caplan, fond brother of Lois Ohrman of Libertyville, dear uncle to Todd Ohrman and Brooke (Steve) Hamilton. Philip Carlson, a resident of northwest Lake Co. for the past 49 years died Tuesday, March 20, 2007 in Libertyville at the age of 79. Born December 13, 1927 in Chicago to Gustav and Bernice (nee Lund) Carlson, Philip Carlson was an Emmy Award-winning television cameraman with a career that spanned over 40 years with the American Broadcasting Company. He attended Carl Schurz High School in Chicago, but left at the age of 17 to enlist in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving with the "Sea Bees" in the Admiralty Islands, and reentering the Navy during the Korean conflict as a quartermaster aboard the USS Bryce Canyon. He was later educated at Drake University and North Park College. He was an avid scuba diver, and served on the Mundelein Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a pioneer in television, from its infancy in the early 1950's through its golden age. A Cameraman's cameraman and a director's dream, Philip Carlson won an Emmy Award in 1961-62 for Best Cameraman, Live on Tape. Throughout the industry he was in demand to televise the most important sporting and current events. These shows include The Wide World of Sports and Monday Night Football, from their inception through their first ten years, Major League Baseball's Game of the Week and the National Basketballs Association Game of the Week, as well as Indianapolis 500 races, numerous Professional Golf Association tour events, and other major televised sporting events. In 1962, he televised the America's Cup yachting race, and also that year was aboard the aircraft carrier USS Antietam to cover John Glenn's historic splashdown. He filmed many national political conventions, beginning in 1952, including the tumultuous 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. In 1984, he was a cameraman for the new hostess of the A.M Chicago talk show, Oprah Winfrey. He finished his career supervising the ABC-TV's Telecine Dept. He was a staunch union man and proud member of NABET Local 41. As they watched their father manage his demanding career, Mr. Carlson's five children learned this work ethic, as well as important life values. Throughout his life, he was a voracious reader with a quick wit that remained intact to his end. Dear Kim,Gail, Glenn, Craig, Kurt and family ...

What wonderful memories I have of us all growing up together. Our Dads were good buddies in their youth, raising their families in a young, happy neighborhood. I remember when they designed and built the red fence in our backyards! I also remember your Dad coming to the our kitchen window with a big smile on his face and talking to me and my Mom on some late afternoons before dinner. I always thought he had a "cool" job!
My sisters, Mom & Dad send you our love and prayers, and hope your memories keep your Dad close to your heart...
