He graduated from Glens Falls High School (1955), Williams College (1959), and Harvard Business School (1961).

Peter had an unrivaled passion for Williams College and dedicated more than sixty years of service to the college. He served on the Board of Trustees from 1983 to 1998, with ten years as Chair of the Executive Committee. He was also an ardent supporter of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, joining the Board in 1999 and serving as President of the Board from 2005 to 2015.

Peter began his career in New York City at American Airlines and Booz, Allen & Hamilton. In 1966 he became Vice President and Treasurer of I.T.T. Continental Baking Company. Peter joined Federal Express in Memphis, Tennessee as Chief Financial Officer in 1974. He later served as President and Chief Operating Officer of FedEx from 1980 to 1983 and continued on as a member of the Board of Directors until 2009. While in Memphis, he served on the boards of First Horizon Bank and Morgan Keegan, Inc. Peter was a Trustee and Board Chair at St. Mary's Episcopal School, a Senior Warden at Church of the Holy Communion, and a Board Member of the Boys and Girls Club of Memphis. He was inducted into the Society of Entrepreneurs in 1992.

In 1983, Peter joined Carson Pirie Scott & Co. in Chicago, Illinois as Chairman, President, and CEO. He subsequently served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Fleming Companies and Zenith Electronics. He also served on the boards of Browning Ferris Industries, International Multifoods, Maytag Corporation, Nicolet Instrument, Mac Frugal's Bargains Close-outs, Inc., Interstate Hotels, and Lebhar-Friedman. Peter was deeply engaged in civic service in Chicago, serving as Chair of the Board at Children's Memorial Hospital, and as a member of the boards of the Associated Colleges of Illinois, Chicago United, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Newberry Library, and Francis W. Parker School.

He had a life-long association with Camp Dudley in Westport, New York and was a member of the Board of Managers. Many enduring friendships began at the camp.

Peter had a passion for thoroughbred horse racing and established Willmott Stables in 1990. He owned and bred numerous accomplished horses. He served as the Chair of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and as a Steward of the Jockey Club.

It is hard to believe that over a year has passed since Pete's passing. Associated Colleges of Illinois cannot help but remember how much influence he had on our organization and on others. We are most grateful for all that he did for us and for his incredible generosity in creating an annual scholarship in his and Michele's name. The impact that their support provides to students is priceless. I wish the Willmott Family a peaceful year ahead. Take care.

I met Pete in 1985, and I´m pretty sure this was the first year he didn´t call me to sing Happy Birthday - the entire song - in his rousing voice. And I know that I wasn´t the only one he did that for. That´s who he was; he was truly one of a kind, and the very best kind. He was my boss, and became my mentor, and then a true friend. He epitomized the best characteristics of leadership, by combining integrity with talent, skill and humility. Pete approached everything with an infectious enthusiasm, and he had a gift of making everyone he encountered feel special. I feel privileged to have known him and to have learned from him, and am grateful for the many years of his friendship.

Old Friends never had a better friend than Pete nor a visitor who was better dressed. I cherish our February walks up the hill to visit Williamstown and feed carrots to IDE. IDE is still growing strong at 30. Our condolences to his family and he will be missed by all of our old friends

April Arnold, ACI Executive Director

Associated Colleges of Illinois (ACI) is grateful for the life and contributions of Peter S. Willmott to our organization and the students we support. He served as an ACI Board of Trustees member and board chair.

A champion of minority student leadership, Peter and his wife, Michele, contributed a substantial endowment to ACI. The endowment led to the creation of scholarships in the name of The Michele and Peter Willmott Fund for Minority Student Leadership. These scholarships are awarded annually through ACI-member colleges and universities to students with financial need and who are outstanding leaders in campus life. The scholarship's purpose is to encourage minority students to develop their leadership skills that will help them in their careers and in life.

Willmott Fund scholarship recipients routinely express thanks to us for Peter and Michele´s generosity. One of the initial first-generation students at Eureka College to receive the award wrote, "Thank you so much for providing this support. It really lifted a large burden from my shoulders. Until college, servant leadership was something I never really understood or liked. Eureka has helped me better understand this type of leadership, helping my leadership skills become more versatile."

Peter Willmott's lifelong commitment to business, community service and education at all levels is well known. His legacy lives on through ACI students who are beneficiaries of Willmott Fund scholarships. ACI is deeply grateful that he (and his family) contributed their finances and service to our mission in this incredibly meaningful way.
