Pauline Silberman Obituary

Silberman, Pauline "Polly" Polly was born in Lima, Ohio and graduated from Ohio University. She earned a Masters at The University of Wisconsin. Polly was also a Fulbright Scholarship recipient. Her travel to Holland on her Fulbright left her with a deep appreciation for gardening. Married to Nathaniel, her husband, who preceded her in death, Polly had a long career in teaching Physical Education in Ohio, Harvey, Illinois and the South Suburbs. Polly and Nat were advocates for the parks and senior causes. Both were avid dinner and theatergoers and enjoyed trying new restaurants in the city and on their travels. Active in the community, the South Shore Commission, the South Shore Cultural Center and South Shore Open House were her major community activities. A long time member of Friends of the Parks, she was a regular attendee at the Chicago Park District Board meetings. She was also active with C.E.P.A., the Southeast Environmental Task Force and the Wildflower Preservation Society. The oldest of five children, with three younger sisters and a brother, Polly will be remembered by seven nieces and nephews. Memorial Service will be held Monday September 13, 2010 at 6:30p.m. South Shore Cultural Center, 7059 South Shore Dr. Chicago, Illinois.

As the Silberman's next door neighbor for 20 years, we have many fond memories of "Aunt Polly" . She and "Uncle Nat" welcomed us to the neighborhood in November 1990 with a fresh Christmas wreath for our front door. Over the years they proved to be real neighbors in the truest sense of the word - we are grateful for their friendship and are very glad that we had opportunities to reciprocate the many acts of kindness they showed to us. There is a void on the block now - they will be sorely missed.
