pat answers
i went back and found the card you sent
on the occasion of my surprising hospitalization
eleven years ago now
it was at the top of the pile in the second drawer
our birthdays were close in date if not in years
and we had our hearts in common
the front of the card proclaims:
"the doctor says you'll be normal in no time!"
and we both know the likelihood of that
you or me
the punch-line is redundant
but the most curious thing inside
was your concern for me
"after all," you said, "it isn't everyone who will eat whatever
i cook no matter"
and i have two recent memories of you:
surprised to find myself
next to you
on the trolly ride to the church
at my sister's wedding
-- i introduced you to my son -
could you imagine my pride in that? --
and the way you lingered at my mother's casket
as we left her behind at St. Mary's
your hand, i think, the last hand upon her
we are all fortunate to have good friends
and i laid claim to you first, dammit
with my 12-year-old flirtatious ways
i loved you
and i was so glad, so much later,
that my mother loved you too
when she was here, i always knew how you were
and you were:
soccer in your basement,
sleep-overs under your back porch,
staying up late watching creature features,
drinking your milk before dinner - yes you too billy -
rowing boats on sister lakes
and freshly cut christmas trees
you were sour cream chocolate cake
and twice-baked potatoes
you were all of those things to me
but we grow up
and grow out
life doesn't simplify
- we suffer from its complexities -
i was lucky enough
to know you for a time
a most important time
i was crying in my car
in the parking lot at work
on the morning after i heard of your passing
and as i thought of you
a young gull lit atop a tree before me
- she and i have had business before -
she surveyed all that was before her
and looked upon me for a long moment
finally heading off
toward the frito lay distribution center
- where i could not go -
and i laughed to myself at that
live well
my friend
