Patricia Martino Obituary

Martino, Patricia Daley

Patricia Daley Martino, of Chicago, aged 86, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2024. She is survived by her children, Courtney, Peter, and Patrick (Kathleen) Thompson; her grandchildren Charles, Eleanor, Richard, Amelia, Grace, Adeline, William and Patrick Thompson; siblings Mary Carol Vanecko, Richard M. Daley, Michael (Nancy) Daley, John (Mary Lou) Daley, William (Bernadette) Daley and many much-loved nieces and nephews. Patricia is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Peter M. Martino, her parents Richard J. and Eleanor Daley, sister Eleanor Daley, in-laws Robert M. (Mary Carol) Vanecko, Maggie (Richard M.) Daley, Barbara (Michael) Daley. She grew up in Chicago and attended St. Xavier Academy for Young Ladies. Patricia graduated from St. Xavier University. She was a former Chicago Public Schools English teacher, teaching at Mather, Kennedy and Tilden high schools.

Patricia was a joy to know. She was known for her smiles and infectious laugh. So much so that her grandchildren called her Grinny instead of Granny. She was a proud Chicago Democrat. Patricia was the most witty and fun person on earth. She brought the sunshine and the laughter, and always had a song at the ready. She could play any song requested on the piano – by ear. Her wit, stories and sense of humor were legendary. She lit up a room. She was the whole party.

She loved her beautiful home in Grand Beach, Michigan, designed and built with love alongside her husband. Patricia loved returning to live in Chicago from Hinsdale, IL. She was an avid reader and life-long learner. She could change your day with her smile and loved with all of her heart. She was a mother like no other. She had legions of friends. Special gratitude to Geneva Brock, Jong Grayes and the team at Mercy Circle, for their loving care.

Visitation is Thursday, March 14, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. at Old St. Patrick's Church, 700 West Adams St, Chicago, IL 60661. Funeral Mass at Noon. Mass will be livestreamed at https://livestream.com/oldstpats. Private interment at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery & Mausoleum.

I was Patricia Daley's English student at Mather High School in 1963. She was a wonderful teacher to say that least. She would not put up with any guff or any comments about her Father. I knew her two brothers when I worked at city hall from 2010--2017. Somehow I was the last one walking out of city hall with her brother on his last day as mayor. I had the blessing of being at her Mother's funeral where Patricia spoke and of course, as an English teacher she read a poem.

To Pat's Family, my husband and I send our deepest condolences on the loss of a dear dear woman. We are sorry an unavoidable appointment prevents us from seeing you in person today. I got to know Pat in the planning for a women's event in the 1983 Mayor's race. She was smart, determined, fun, oh so much fun. I recall a comment she made about Sox tickets when they were getting better and she remarked that Rich better not think he's getting all those tickets. (we are all such fans.) every time I'd see her through the years and remark on how we met she'd say "didn't we have some fun kid?!?" yes, we did. because Pat was just wonderful. Sending peace and love.

To the Daley, Thompson and Martino families:

My heartfelt sympathy on the passing of Patricia. A beautiful person inside and out. May wonderful memories carry you through these rough days ahead and give you comfort. A heavenly birthday to be celebrated in the company of our Lord and St. Patrick. A grand banquet with her husband, parents, and many family members. May she rest in the peace of Christ to suffer no more. Losing your mother is one of the hardest things in this world. She will never be forgotten and live on in your hearts. May her soul and all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

With love and sympathy
