Cousin Nettie

February 16, 2014

We were first cousins. My mother Rose was her aunt, godmother and frequent babysitter. Patty was 17 months older than me. As children we spent a lot of time playing, along with our cousin Sue who was 15 months older than her. After Patty's son Ryan was born in 1980 I spent time with them for another three years. I hope Ryan remembers those ginger bread houses I made for him:) After they moved to be near her siblings who lived in Kane County, (that seemed really far to me!) I didn't see her much. Occasionally she called just to catch up with each other. A couple of years ago my mother was researching her ancestry and found Patty's younger sister Kathleen who was a year younger than Patty and raised by their father and grandmother since the early 1960's in San Antonio, TX. Patty's sisters invited Kathleen and her husband Paul to meet us. That's the first time I met Kathleen and the last time I saw Patty. They resembled each other very much. Patty was kind, friendly, funny, and even said I was her favorite cousin. I hadn't known that. I hope she is resting in peace and relieved she passed in her own bed all comfy at home.
P.S. In lieu of a wake/funeral, Patty's son, sisters, brothers-in-law, and partner held a beautiful luncheon and celebration of Patty's life. Thank you for that.
