Patricia Hollaway Obituary

Patricia B. Hollaway died peacefully on Wednesday, June 9, 2010, in Bellingham, Washington. Pat was born April 21, 1921, in Camden, New Jersey to Anthony J. and Helen R. (Murphy) Bechtel. She graduated from Collingswood High School in 1939, and married William D. "Jimmy" Hollaway in 1943. After the war, she relocated to West Palm Beach, FL, where she continued her lifelong quest to provoke and amuse everyone she met. She worked as a bookkeeper and cashier in places of employ ranging from the Officer's Club at Palm Beach Air Force Base to the Coral Beach Club. Later, she turned her attention to banking, where she rose from teller to head teller to vice-president at the Bank of Palm Beach & Trust Company, with an 8-year stint at Central Bank thrown in. She loved her dear friends, especially Del and her girls, books, the beach, greeting cards, poetry and rhymes, bridge, bawdy jokes, loud parties, Sousa, banjos, big bands, Judy Garland, Dean Martin, Elvis, Elmo, pelicans, the circus, all things Irish, and a stiff drink or two. She was preceded in death by her sister, Anne. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James Patrick "Swampy" and Janis W. Hollaway of Blaine, her beloved granddaughter, Erin, of Brooklyn, NY, and her niece, Patrice Kaupe, of West Palm Beach, FL, and nephew, Christopher Baker, of Lake Worth, FL. She will be mightily missed. A Memorial Mass will be held at Church of the Assumption, 2116 Cornwall Ave., in Bellingham at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, June 18. A reception will follow in the bistro at The Willows, 3115 Squalicum Pkwy., at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to a favorite charity.

I had the pleasure of working with Pat at Central Bank.Best memory was Pat's story of getting stopped one night after having a drink or two - the officer asked her when she had her last drink - Pat's response was "son, I haven't had my last drink". so,today I tip a glass to one of a kind, you will be missed.

Dear Swampy and Janis, Pat lives forever in my memory as friend of my Aunt Mary Alice Feasel, mom of Swampy and one who I enjoyed just sitting down and talking to for no reason! It brought a smile to my face just seeing her picture in the obit. I remember the saying may you be in heaven for 30 minutes before the devil knows you are there!!! Just like her. Know our thoughts are with you guys. Love, Joyce and Jim Russell

Dear Hollaway Family,

We were very sorry to hear of your loss. As a youngster, I clearly remember entering the cool, wood paneled and quiet main floor of the bank, and trying to be quiet myself, when Auntie Pat would stand right up behind her desk and waive me over -- with such a big greeting! So much for the quiet. We truly enjoyed her company at many family get togethers. She was a very unique person who spread laughs and cheer. You all are very much in our thoughts. Shari and Hans

Hi, Swampy. Your mom - WHAT a gift to us all. We (Wallace girls) will never forget the levity and love that went along with her. Who could ever forget the "pennies" story (pennies was misspelled by a Jai Alai player), and the countless hours of bridge! You, Janis and Erin were her JOY. I think about her so much - always will.
With love,
Leslie, Terry, Laurie and her NJ buddie, Del!

As they say in the movies"Thanks for the memories." As I sit here I am fondly remembering my friend, Patty B, and several special memories come to mind. I will never forget Patty B wanting to join our girls sewing circle. Pat could not even thread a needle but she came along every week with her tablecloth that she was determined to cross stitch. All of the girls took turns threading the needle for Pat. We continued to meet for several years and for several years Pat brought along that same tablecloth. To this day I am not sure if she ever completed it. I will also remember our many visits to Charley's Crab restaurant in Palm Beach after work at Bank of Palm Beach and Patty B eating her smelts. She was ALWAYS good for a laugh and had such wonderful expressions that I will keep with me forever. I will miss you dearly Patty B and will miss getting my birthday card that you always sent to me from Current stationary. I will treasure the ones I have received over the years from you. My prayers go out to Swampy and Janis and know that your mom was loved.

Jim (Swampy) & Janis, I typically don't review the obits, but for some reason I did yesterday & saw that Pat had died. It brought back memories of her when Jim & I "palled around" in high school & the VW Beatle she drove & let Jimmy drive occasionally. She was the "neatest" (I'm dating myself here using that vernacular) of all moms, full of fun, piss & vinegar. You were fortunate to have her in your life all those years, Fond regards, Mickey Monchick

Dear Loved Ones,
Wow - how truly blessed we all were to have been touched by our crazy, adorable Pat. I worked with Pat many moons ago at Bank of Palm Beach and have wonderful memories of all the laughs she brought my way. I recall her at a huge bank gathering (attended by Board members and President Jake Morgan). Pat and a few of her groupies (Joy Ramirez was involved naturally) came strolling out with Pat at the lead wearing only her full slip. She would literally do ANYTHING to make people laugh. I will always smile when I think of her. God Bless each and everyone of you.

Aunty Pat.......
May you be in Heaven a half hour before the devil knows you are dead...This little saying hung in Mom's house and was the motto of all - I miss you and am sad..... Having you as my aunt was my good fortune.

love,
patrice

I worked at the Bank of Palm Beach on the island with Pat. She was a cheerful, lovable, wonderful person, and I still can see her walking upstairs to the dining room, to get an afternoon cuppa, and talking to operations as she passed by. Sometimes she even talked to herself to keep her mood light! She took such good care of her mom, and I still miss her, even though I didn't see her after I left the bank in 1987. She was memorable, and wonderful, and I was blessed to have known her.

I also worked with Pat at Central Bank in WPB. She was one of the most happy of anyone I knew. In fact, she was the God Mother to my son when he was baptised in the Catholic Church. Lost track of her over the years but thought of her often.

May God hold you in the palm of His Hand during your sad times. But know Pat was surly loved......

To the Hollaway family I worked with Pat many years at Central Bank. She always was in a great mood and made you laugh if you were down. I have thought of her often throughout the years and yes she will be missed by all who knew her. Thank you Pat for some great times!

Jim, Janis and Erin:

This is a great loss. Pat was hard-working, cheerful - always cheerful - and we now know how tough she was as a pioneer feminist breaking the trail for working women everywhere.

I am so sorry. Kay joins me in sending our deepest sympathy. She will be smiling on in our hearts forever. She was a dear, dear person, truly loved.

Jim,
I can clearly remember going into the Bank and always asking to see your Mom. No matter how busy, she probably was, she always took time to come out and visit for awhile. She was a wonderful woman.
