Norma Ella Clark Wendel

Norma Wendel Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - On Aug. 5, 1905, Norma Ella Clark Wendel was born in Chicago. Before departing on Tuesday, July 31, 2001, Norma touched the lives of many people who were pleased to know her. She was the third child of Mable and Norman Clark. At 17, while still in high school, Norma married her high school sweetheart, George Herman Wendel. While George and Norma initially kept their marriage a secret, this was the beginning of their wonderful 64-year marriage. The happy couple moved to Boston, where George began his career and Norma's first child, Joanne, was born. As the Second World War seemed inevitable, George joined the Army, and their small family returned to Chicago. In Chicago, their second child, Phil, was born. The family moved numerous times as George's successful Army career progressed. During these moves, Norma stayed devoted and dedicated to her husband and children. As a mother, Norma taught her children to be strong and independent. After a tour of duty at the Pentagon, George retired as a colonel in the U.S. Army. Norma and George moved to Williamsburg in 1972. After George's death in April 1986, Norma focused her attention on her seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Norma loved to be surrounded by her family and was never known to turn down an invitation to a party. Left to celebrate Norma's life is her son, Phil Wendel of Charlottesville; granddaughter, Cindy Greyson and her husband, Jay, of Richfield, Ohio; grandson, Jim Hall and his wife, Kendra, of Charlottesville; granddaughter, Susan Johnson and her husband, Hunter; granddaughter, Leslie Scholz and her husband, Eric; granddaughter, Kim Wendel of Charlottesville; granddaughters, Allison and Cheryl Wendel, both of San Francisco; and great-grandchildren, Courtenay Johnson, Mark Greyson, Matthew Greyson, Hunter Johnson Jr., Ashley Greyson, Claire Johnson, Schuyler Hall, Sam Scholz, Allie Hall and Isabel Scholz. Preceding her in death were her loving husband, George, and her daughter, Joanne, both of whom are still loved and remembered. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 323, Williamsburg, VA 23187. Bucktrout of Williamsburg is handling the arrangements.
