Nathan Shapiro Obituary

Shapiro, Nathan

Nathan Shapiro, a resident of Highland Park, IL since 1967, and born June 1, 1936 to parents Lester & Edna Shapiro, passed away peacefully December 31, 2024.

Nate was the beloved husband of Randy (nee Luster) Shapiro for 62 years; the cherished father of Steve (Leslie) Shapiro, Danny (Anne) Shapiro, and Lesley (Nate) Stillman; grandfather of Joey, Tony, Jack, Jayson, Jordyn, Emily, Sam, Nick, Noah, Payton, Addison, and Samantha; and great grandfather of Tatum and Riley. Nate was also the brother of Robert (late Gwen) Shapiro and the late Norton (late Barbara) Shapiro.

Nate graduated 1st in his class from Northwestern University. After which he served in the US Army and later the Reserves. He joined his family's business, National Superior, working alongside his brothers and father. Nate later became an investor, founding his brokerage firm SF Investments, and joining in partnership with New Vernon Capital in 2004.

Nate is best known for his tireless work with the American Association for Ethiopian Jews, which ultimately resulted in Operation Moses and Solomon, rescuing over 25,000 isolated Jews in Ethiopia and bringing them to Israel. He is a hero to many for his actions. Nate was also known as one of the original marathoners, participating in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in 1980. Nate was a man of faith who lived Judaism every day. His ultimate expression was his unwavering kindness and positivity toward all, for which he was also well known.

Nate was a childhood pal since 1949 at Clinton Elementary school and one of my best friends through high school at Senn and my roomie at Drake University.
We have stayed in touch by phone and e-mail and we got to see each other at our annual reunions in Chicago. We all love Nate and this is another tough loss to cope with. In our hearts and memories Nate will remain young and vibrant and alive.
Harv
From Allen:
I´ve known Nate as Harv´s baby brother since I was 9 years old.
Nate spent a lot of time at our house on Glenlake Av and was always kind and cheerful to me even though I was only his pal´s kid brother and probably a pest for the "big boys."
Their entire gang used to gather at our place since my dad put up a basketball hoop
and all the young athletes liked to show off their amazing skills.
All those guys were very good, Chuck, Normie, Jimmy, Freddy and Nate but I think Nate was maybe the best of that bunch.
They were nice to me and allowed me to go running after the ball when it rolled down the street in front of all those speeding cars.
Harv and I have teared up pretty good with Nate´s passing but he´s not gone .....he´s just shooting baskets with Jimmy and Norm waiting to be joined by the rest of the gang.
We aren´t rushing it but we know we will see them again and we know Nathan will be anxious to show off his latest trick shot!
